“Definitely Coming Back”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2013

A perfect 70 degrees with a nice ocean breeze. Beautiful sunset views. Falling asleep to the sound of waves crashing on the beach below. Seagulls regularly patrolling the airspace above the bluffs and occasionally depositing souvenirs on your campsite. Sounds like a perfect vacation to me.

I would definitely do South Carlsbad SB Campground again. Next year, we're booking early so we can stay for more than one one night. We were lucky enough to get a bluff-side spot, albeit for just an overnight trip. Site 207 was large enough for our two tents, an REI shelter, and our two cars. And there was plenty of real estate to spare. It's only a couple of spots from the stairs to the beach and right between bathrooms in each direction. The bushes on each side give you a good amount of privacy from your neighbors.

When booking, I suggest checking Campsite Photos. They have a photo of every campsite at South Carlsbad (http://www.campsitephotos.com/campground/South-Carlsbad-State-Beach/photos/). Combined with Google Maps, you should be able to find the perfect spot for you.

“First camping trip to Carlsbad”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2013

This was our first camping trip to Carlsbad and we had a great time. The beach is down a long flight of stairs and we never made it down there. We did see dolphins everyday. The campsites all have their own fire pits and were very large. They have showers and bathrooms that are close to all the sites. It's not close to town so if you need something there is a small store otherwise you will need a car to head into town. There were a lot of surfers too.

“Lots of lights at night”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2013

This campground is right on a coastal highway with little separation from the roadway so it is noisy and bright. We stayed in a tent at site 205 which was a huge campsite. It turned out to be right by an intersection with red lights and 4 large overhead street lights. Our tent was lighted all night (bad) but traffic died down and it got pretty quiet at night (good.) The beach was clean, wide and nice and it was fun watching the surfers. I was surprised at the number of dog owners who didn't pick up after their pets. Some let their dogs poop in unocupied camp sites and just leave the mess. One left a pile right at the top of the stairs to the beach. Ick. Given how some people are pigs in the restrooms (bless those who clean them up) I shouldn't be surprised. Just disappointed.

“Cold and a bit dirty”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2013

We went in early may so it was a bit cold but it was one of my kids first time that he could remeber going to the beach. They loved it. The beach was a bit dirty but I am sure that during the summer it is taken care of more. Not a bad beach.

“Site 52 - Awesome spot!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

This is a nice larger campsite where the ocean is your backyard. Went here on a Monday, and the campground was basically empty.....won't be the case after Memorial Day but it sure was a nice evening out with friends. Site 52 is a great spot!
