Cuisines: Mexican
Description: Here's my review: The good news is it's on a busy street corner. The bad news is, well, you get the idea. There's not much to be done about the bus stop out front or the weed-surrounded dilapidated tractor next door, but faster and more attentive service would help to distract customers. The beer menu is lengthy and several are offered in pint drafts, more would be better. Chips and salsa are complimentary but the cheesy one is oddly reminiscent of velveeta and picante sauce. Entrees were colorful and flavorful and food is generally good. The biggest challenge for Huapango's is the street corner location and the best remedy would seem to be service that is louder and faster than the street.

“Indifferent food & service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

We were a party of 3 going for brunch. The restaurant was not busy but it took the waiter at least 20 minutes to come to take our order. Food took almost 30 minutes to arrive and was lukewarm, meaning it had been sitting for quite a while. No syrup was offered for the pancakes or French toast. No condiments of any sort were offered. Two of the party had the Hacienda Breakfast which promised much, including a complimentary glass of champagne but delivered little (including no champagne). The 3rd ordered from the a la carte menu and had a Mexican burger which looked disgusting and what it lacked in quality more than made up for in quantity. It is disappointing to have to leave a tip in such circumstances, but the minimum 15% it was. This was not the way to start the day; maybe it gets better as the day goes on.

“Great lunch!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2012

On our way to the San Diego Zoo, we decided to look for somewhere to eat. We happened upon this place and they claimed to be the "Best Mexican Food", so, what the heck, let's try it! We were the first ones in (they opened at 11:00am) and we were seated promptly. We had a little trouble with my wife's order - it seems that stating "fajita chicken, plain, no vegetables" doesn't stop them from putting a sauce over her burrito and onions on top. It looked beautiful, but she just couldn't eat it. She asked to send it back and just get a bean and cheese burrito, plain, with just beans and cheese, but again those pesky onions found their way on top. She decided to attempt it by prying open the burrito top and eating the inside, but by then her appetite was gone and we just decided to take it home so I could eat it later. The manager came and asked if everything was OK, and we explained what happened, and he insisted that we wait for him to at least make her some cheese quesadillas. He did, and he was so nice and helpful, and even gave us very good directions to the Zoo!

“Wonderful Little Restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2012

We agree with most of the reviewers here: this is a wonderful little restaurant. Our group of 7 ate at Huapango's on December 29, 2011, and everyone enjoyed their meal. Among the dishes we enjoyed were chicken mole, lobster enchilada, shrimp tacos, chimichanga, and the lobster quesadilla. The chicken mole and the lobster quesadilla were highlights. The group also agreed that the margaritas were strong; can't complain about that. The waiter was friendly. We found parking half a block away. During our trip we also ate at a couple of Mexican restaurants in Old Town, but Huapango's was better. All 7 of us highly recommend Huapango's!

“Greasy Over Cooked Food”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2012

We ate here for dinner.
The menu choices look really good and maybe some of the items are good tasting but that was not the experience we had. Our lobster fajitas ($17) came with 5 very small balls of lobster and the vegies (onion, bell pepper, mushrooms) were like GREASY MUSH. And I honestly am not exaggerating about the vegies. I don't know if they are always cooked like this but if they are then I would imagine that the other menu items are greasy and overcooked as well.

My Dos XX . Amber (beer) was $4.50 The tortilla chips were also very greasy and dark looking as if the oil they had been cooked in was dirty (over-used). The salsa was too spicy for my taste.

The place is small and the tables are very close together. We had to wait (after asking twice) for more corn tortillas to be delivered to eat with are fajitas to the point of our food getting cold.

Looking back now, we should have complained to the manager but it is generally against our nature to do so.

“Great Mexican Restaurant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2011

We stumbled in to Huapango's by accident, due to stop & go traffic on 6th Ave. We had a delicious dinner in a charming atmosphere. When we were there the restaurant was decorated for Christmas. The fish tacos were delicious! Highly recommend this restaurant.
