“Gaslamp Quarter San Diego”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

We had a group of six people traveling to San Diego to see a long weekend of baseball games and wanted someplace close to Petco Ballpark. The location was incredibly convenient for our group which included an elderly couple who have some difficulty walking distances. The staff were wonderfully friendly and very helpful with all of our needs. We love the variety and convenience of the breakfast with both hot and cold tasty choices. The room was clean and very spacious and we liked having the sink outside of the bathroom. What a great, fun place to stay!

My wife and I chose to visit the Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego for the first time a few weeks ago. We live in Los Angeles, about 130 miles north and have visited San Diego many times over the years, but we've never stayed in the downtown area, so this was our first. We have frequently stayed in Residence Inns, primarily for the free breakfasts and the convenience of eating in if we wished. The staff was super friendly, starting with the people handling valet parking. The hotel is conveniently located with the Baseball stadium about 4 blocks away, light rail about 3 blocks away and a myriad of restaurants within easy walking distance in any direction. The only negative is parking fees. Valet parking is $45 per night at the hotel with few less expensive alternatives if you plan to use your car during your stay (cheaper parking nearby provide no "in and out" privileges. Parking fees in areas outside of downtown (i.e. Mission Bay, Hotel Circle, etc.) are not so steep. As it turned out, I used the light rail system or walked to most sites we visited and didn't really need a car. I will visit the Gaslamp District again and stay at this hotel again, but I will park my car somewhere else for the duration of our stay.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review our beautiful hotel. As you described, we are located in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, just 2 blocks away from Petco Park. Our valet parking is competitively priced with other hotels in the Gaslamp at $38 per night with in and out privileges. Thank you again for your review! We hope you stay with us again the next time you are in town!

First and foremost, staff at this Residence Inn are super-friendly and attentive. The free breakfast was good; and the location could not be more convenient. Room was a good size, but the TV placement was odd, and the bathroom sink was outside the bathroom, sort of jutting out, which we found weird. Along with another recent reviewer, I was disappointed that there was no room safe, nor a bathroom exhaust fan. On the other had, it was nice having a regular sized refrigerator and microwave. So, would we stay here again, you betcha!

Thank you for taking the time to review our beautiful hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter! We are so happy you enjoyed your stay with us. When our hotel was built in 2009, we opted for an ultra-quiet bathroom exhaust system that runs whenever the bathroom light is turned on. This ensures that our guests will have a quiet stay with us, without hearing the constant hum of a bathroom fan. Residence Inns also typically do not have room safes. For your convenience, we do offer complimentary safety deposit boxes located at the Front Desk that you can access 24/7. Once again, thank you for your great review and we look forward to your next stay with us!

My family and I were in town for a soccer tournament and stayed at Residence Inn Downtown primarily because of location. Tournament was in Coronado and location provided easy access to bridge crossing over to island. Gaslamp District, Petco Field (enjoyed great game between Padres & Yankees plus had lots of pre-game fun @ Dick's Last Resort restaurant) all within walking distance. Only negative I could think of was very small pool & fitness area, but we didn't really have time to utilize anyway. Daily valet pricing a bit high, but parking is expensive in the area. Free daily breakfast made up for it though. Other than that, good value for the location.

The location of this hotel is brilliant, right in the heart of everything from the USS Midway (20 minutes along the harbour) to bars, clubs and restaurants (1 minutes) so you really cannot find a better location. The front desk are amazingly helpful and there was nothing that we could not ask that they did not help with. The rooms are very clean and everyone is friendly, nice and really try hard to make sure you have a nice time. At breakfast we needed some help and when one of the team could not help not only did they get someone that could but went above and beyond with additional information.

While it may be argued that the rooms and the hotel from the lifts up is a little dated and could do with a refurb this is probably a bit harsh on the hotel. It is acceptable within the expectations of the price and there is nothing to really complain about.

The only negative is the valet/concierge at the hotel. They are contracted rather than hotel staff and could not care about anything except parking the car and getting your cash. They have no intention of assisting with bags, providing directions or answering questions. One actually told me to us the computers inside to look up directions...not acceptable. I hope the Marriott/Residence Inn realise that first impressions count...and they are not a good first impression!

Would return and stay here again so give it a try...

Marriott Residence Inns are consistently great, and the service at this very well located hotel is as good as can be but the rooms are not up to Residence Inn standards.
We had a King Size bed studio. There was one small kitchen table and no separate table or desk to work on. There was no personal safe in the closet. There was no exhaust in the bathroom (how do they explain that??). The TV was mounted on the same wall alongside the sofa so you can't sit on the sofa and watch T.V.
The bed was good, the room spacious, the facilities were clean and the breakfast was great.
The location is fantastic. In the Gaslamp district, near Petco Park, the Convention Center, and the shore.
Overall, very good, but the design of the room and the missing table and safe (and no exhaust in the bathroom) was puzzling.

Stayed at this property for a stay of 5 nights attending a convention at the Convention Centre.
Great location, right in the Gaslamp District with restaurants, bars and Petco Centre, 2 blocks from the Convention Centre. The Convention Centre is located on the walkway by the ocean.

Rooms are newly renovated and very clean.

The breakfast items and evening snacks had good items, but could be better presented.
Nice small outdoor pool. Exercise room has large glass door that can be open to the pool - nice to have fresh air.

Left the hotel very early to go to the airport, taxis available at the taxis stand on the corner of the street - very convenient.

I would recommend this property.

Room Tip: Higher floor - music from bars in the area can be loud.
