“Okay, but...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2014

This was a good opportunity to see the history of man and compare to the evolution of the ape. Not really overimpressed with this particular museum. It was okay, but would rather have spent the time in another area of Balbao Park.

“One great collection in a lovely museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2014 via mobile

A very nice museum with great pieces of art. They have an event each year that is called art alive and recreate some of the art pieces in flower arrangements is a very unique and pretty experience that I recommend.

“SHINING THROUGH IN BALBOA PARK! ENJOYABLE 3 HOURS”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2014

We love art museums that feature a broad swath in their collection. The SDMA fits this to a tee. It has the Impressionists and Post Impressionists (Manet, Degas, etc.), Pablo Picasso lady Femme Bandeau, Joan Miro, Woman Bird and Constellation (really gorgeous), Modigiliani picture of a young man or boy, Robert Henri, portrait of his wife, the altar piece in bronze with Vishnu and Shri Devi, and my two favorites, two large ceramic camels, and a water color named Mokham Singh rides Samser.

This lovely museum which sits in Balboa Park is worth some time. Come to Balboa Park around 11a.m. and enjoy a great lunch at the Prado Restaurant next to the visitor's center. Budget time to your own taste but leave room for up to three hours if you really like art. There are several notable nearby museums and gardens to also throw into the mix.

Parking is nearby and you take the free tram right to the museum and visitor's center.

SPECIAL NOTE: The main entrance over the bridge into Balboa Park is closed and will be for some time. Wish someone had told us and thankful there were detour signs to guide us around to another entrance!

“A wonderful Museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

My wife and I thought that we would make a quick visit to this museum…….but ended up spending several hours! Aside from the beauty of the building itself, the art displays were magnificent.
