“A Very Pleasant Weekend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2011

We have stayed in a number of Hampton Inn's around the country and think they are always a great value. And so is this one. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the room was very clean. The staff in the breakfast area made a special effort to clean off a table for us, because it was a very busy morning. This Hampton has very easy access to Interstate 5. Nice room, free breakfast and free internet access equals a great deal.

I am a frequent traveler to Del Mar, CA. Had stayed in all the nearby hotels and decided to try Hampton Inn. The room was spacious and immaculate. All staff team members were courteous and professional. The free parking (I pay $17-$35 per day at comparable hotels) was close-up outside or in a gated underground garage.
In minutes I logged on to my lap top. Free, unlimited high-speed wireless internet.
The free buffet breakfast was beyond compare--eggs, waffles, cereals, fresh fruit, three blends of coffee, tea, hot chocolate, fruit juices, bagels, muffins, fresh fruit, pastry and much more.
If you plan to visit the San Diego/Del Mar area don't even consider another hotel. Add the excellent service, clean room, friendly pleasant ambiance, free parking, free internet, bountiful free breakfast and peace of mind-- then factor your room rate.
I have spinal stenosis and five degenerative lower lumbar discs. For 19 years (and as many mattresses) I wake up with severe back pain. Because I travel often I dread hotel beds. For three days I woke up pain-free! Trust me, they just don't get any better than the Hampton Inn, San Diego/Del Mar California.

Value for money even if you are looking for a weekend get-away. Near by market area has a lot of restaurants as well. Only thing missing is room service...

Good location no views whatsoever but the staff we incredible. I was particularity impressed with Josh at the front desk. We needed a tad more space since we were traveling with my young daughter and he went out of his way to accommodate. The Breakfasts each morning were wonderful with friendly attentive staff.

Hampton Inn boasts a stellar, overall reputation from personal and professional experience so this was a natural choice for a stay in North County San Diego. However, this Del Mar location was merely average, not a notch above the rest.

PROS:
Given the close proximity to I-5, the room was surprisingly quiet with double-paned windows - absolutely no noise. It's very close to Sorrento Valley, La Jolla, and a quick hop to Downtown San Diego so the commute is little to none. Surrounding amenities are excellent: Von's grocery store, multiple restaurants (Mexican, Thai, American Contemporary, Sushi, BBQ, and fast food) and gas stations. It is seven (7) minutes to Torrey Pines State Reserve and Beach which is an excellent option for fitness enthusiasts and those just looking to soak up the North County San Diego Beach scene for even just a short while.

The breakfast spread was excellent with even more healthy options to boot: oatmeal, skim milk, cereal, and very fresh fruit (apples and bananas). The breakfast area was spacious, clean, and well attended to.

They have made a conscientious effort in the area of security. The front is locked down after 10 pm and the underground parking provides vehicle peace of mind. Small steps, but preventative ones.

CONS:
Scrambled eggs were from a camping package. There is no reason to provide scrambled eggs unless they're fresh. They provided fresh hard boiled, so why substitute the scrambled? It's a shortcut that Hampton Inn typically doesn't take.

Every room typically has a refrigerator and microwave and have never had to pay more for a room with those two amenities. Why change what works, especially in the high tech area of North County?

The fitness center is small with dated equipment. Upgrades are needed especially for this being in one of the healthiest and fittest communities in San Diego county. The business center is, well, a computer in the breakfast room ... might want to rethink the planning on that one.

All in all, the Hampton Inn Del Mar has: an excellent location and nearby amenities. It has plateaued in a few areas, but after all, it's the attention to details that can make an average stay an excellent one.

The hotel's accommodations are ok for one or two nights. The hotel appears clean, but what was most disturbing was the smell of the hallways when you get off the elevator to go to the guest rooms. The rugs are in need of a deep cleaning. The smell reminds you of a college dorm. I actually had them spray my room while I went out for dinner.

I did not partake of the continental breakfast. The take away breakfast bag had a muffin, water, badly bruised apple, and granola bar). I did go for hot water one evening in the kitchen area and it was not even warm so I had to go without.

I tried to use their business center (a computer in the corner of kitchen area) but it did not allow me to connect a usb card to download files. I had to ask a guy at the front desk to take my usb and print documents for my meeting.

The shower drain in my bathtub did not drain appropriately.

I will likely stay at the Doubletree or Marriott which are adjacent and within walking distance on the next trip. I did not partake of the hotel's continental breakfast.

Free Wifi worked with your HH awards number.

The front desk people were nice and apologized when I informed them of my concerns.

I am very picky with my hotels and read alot of reviews and do alot of research before booking one for my vacations. I have stayed at a Hampton before and was very happy with it so after reading the other positive reviews of this one and the fact that it was very inexpensive compared to other nearby hotels I went ahead and booked it. My husband and I enjoyed our stay immensly...we had a much better stay than our family who were staying at Hilton at Torrey Pines in La Jolla.

Hot breakfast changed everyday giving us variety, belgium waffles were yummy, dining area was spacious with computer/printer station and two tvs. The lobby was roomy and nicely decorated for Christmas. Free wi fi and parking was a huge plus and they had extra parking underground which was helpful but the spots were tight due to large pillars.

Despite 3 high school basketball teams staying the same week as us we had a great peaceful week at this hotel. The rooms and beds were very nice and hotel was nearby restaurants and other stores and right off of highway 5 and 20 minutes from San Diego airport.
