My husband and I just returned from 4 days in San Diego before visiting friends and relatives upstate. We stayed at Humphrey's Half Moon In and Suites on Shelter Island (on advice from forum) and it was absolutely perfect. Shelter Island is off the beaten path, pleasantly quiet with beautiful views of downtown and the harbor, but close to everything. We loved the tropically landscaped grounds and pool, the large comfortable room, the service and the restaurant. We walked to the Bali Hai restaurant across the roundabout for a fabulous dinner with a view one night, and drove to Miguel's at nearby Scott Street another. It was lovely not to have to drive far at night for dinner, after touring all day.
We love to walk, and so enjoyed exploring Old Town, Little Italy, the Gaslamp district, University Heights, and of course, the zoo and Balboa Park. We loved the public park, music and outdoor cafes on Coronado Island, with beautiful views back toward town. We also drove over to see the Del, which was charming, but the traffic was bumper to bumper all the way. And the restaurant menu was disappointing -right on the water and no fresh seafood, so we didn't stay. We also enjoyed walking around La Jolla, having lunch in a sidewalk cafe, and were enchanted by the seals and pups at the cove. The museum of modern art, which is there, was also nice, and we drove up the winding roads in the hills to see the houses and views.
Having never been to San Diego before, we were surprised at how much we liked it. It's a great climate, very pretty, easy layout and manageable traffic.
