“December Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

We are well travelled and this is an honest review.

The location is excellent and great for walking or biking in the local area. The resort is only 10 mins (depending on traffic to downtown).

The resort has a great fell very tropical with well tendered gardens, the rooms are clean comfortable and spacious ( we stayed in tropical garden view). There are parts of the outdoor stairs which require a coat of paint but nothing to spoil the stay. The pool is excellent large enough for the kids to play with shallow end and it is heated so we could still swim on a December evening. The restaurant was excellent and good value ( $6 for a kids meal and I was told it was the best burger ever) The main menu was varied and excellent quality and was priced in the low to mid twenties for an entrée.

For a 3.5 STAR property it was excellent value (we found a great deal ) and we will return.

Room Tip: Tropical view room

We stayed in the Tropical View guest room.
The room had a small area for basic refreshment making including a microwave and a fridge but no kettle (which is kind of an essential to Brits who like tea), it has a coffee maker. To be fair the hotel’s website does state the room amenities and to be honest if you want more extensive facilities you should book the suites.

The room was clean and beds were very large and comfortable. There was a big TV in the room and all the usual bits.

It was nice to have a small patio area with chairs and the grounds are well maintained and have a Hawaiian feel. The pool and hot tub are nice too.

Although we didn’t go to any concerts, we heard a couple. They don’t go on late so we didn’t mind, in fact it’s quite good to be able to listen for free!

The best thing about the hotel is the tropical atmosphere, beautiful grounds, clean comfortable rooms and the location. The free shuttle bus from the airport is handy too. There are a few shops and restaurants within walking distance and it’s nice to walk along the island and watch the pelicans etc.

The Sunday buffet is good, lots of choice and a great view over the harbour.

Negatives:
Parking is extra, $10 a night. There is some parking nearby but be careful as some of the parking notices are obscured by trees and you usually have to move your car very early in the morning because of street cleaning.

Service could be better – we politely informed reception that they had left our room door open, they seemed to ignore this as it happened a few times. We weren’t happy as we had laptops etc in the room, luckily no one took anything.

When we stayed in June/July it was sometimes quite noisy during the day, but our room backed on to the main garden area, the grounds were well used by families for weddings etc. Also, some guest’s children used the manicured lawn for playing ball games and were very noisy. We don’t mind noise but at times it was excessive. Staff either did not notice or did not bother to do anything. This could be a problem if you wanted a peaceful place to stay etc.

If you feel like relaxing in your room, you can. If you feel like chilling in the hot tub, you can. If you want a night life, its there. If you want a nice place for dinner, walk down the street to many nice restaurants. If you'd like a walk on the beach, or to gaze over the bay from the dock, its easy to get to.

I stayed on business, and it was very easy for me to get good rest, and just go straight to my room and back out again in the morning when I needed it. And on the weekend I was able to relax with other great guests in the dining rooms and bar and pool area. And it was within a short driving distance to downtown and Balboa park for entertainment.

I'll stay there again.

Room Tip: Get a bay view room, facing away from the pool so you can have a good view of downtown.

We had a great time in San Diego. The hotel was nice only thing once you check in they hit you with a $10 per night parking fee that was not shown online. They did have bikes you can rent with the first 2 hrs free. The bed squeaked alot.

My husband and I stayed at Humphreys in October for 3 nights. This was our first time in San Diego and the hotel had been recommended by a family member. Our room was gorgeous with it's wooden shutters, roof and carefully arranged towels and bed-throw. It was very spacious and had a good view over the marina. As is standard in most American inns, our room came with tea/coffee making facilities, a microwave and a fridge - very handy after a hard day of sightseeing. Please note that there is a parking charge in this hotel - however this seems to be standard in San Diego and there is very little overnight street parking in the area. The hotel is located on Shelter Island which is a little outside the city centre but provides a quiet relaxing stay with great views. My only (small) complaint would be that the staff at check-in were too busy and as a result were quite sharp with us. Initially we were given a ground floor room but as we walked into the room we noticed that there was still a guest in the room! The staff were not very apologetic for this error but we did not allow the service to spoil our stay. Overall a great hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a second floor room to get more light and better views.

We stayed at Humphreys in a room right next to the concert. It didn't turn out bad at all. The room had plenty of space, was clean, and the concert ended at 10:00 pm sharp so we did not have a noise issue trying to sleep. Location is terrific and we would definately return. Close to some of our favorite restaurants as well.

After walking thru the hookers in the lobby I get to my room which was deceptively labeled as an upgrade. In facts in the oldest building on the property, next to a busy road, with paper thin walls, and up 3 flights of stairs.

Rude gal at counter refuses to even say sorry about toilet or malfunctioning lights, refused to refund the big I cancelled.

Obviously crooks...

It is our ultimate goal to provide our guests with the best accommodations, hospitality and service. Therefore, when an issue or challenge occurs, we strive to correct it as quickly and efficiently as possible. Unfortunately, sometimes our attempts are hindered when a guest engages in abusive and profane behavior towards our staff, including rude and derogatory comments directed at other guests. We apologize that we could not come to a more satisfying conclusion on this occasion.
