“Lower than expectations, maybe we picked the wrong room type??”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2012

Decided to book the Tropical queen room after reviewing glossy pictures on internet and finding holiday discounts. Not sure what the tropical view was supposed to be as our room faced a deteriorating retaining wall. I almost thought we were given wrong room at first, but furniture and bedding were as pictured.
The grounds are quite tropical and we enjoyed a couple of evening swims in the heated pool and hot tub. Walked to Red Sail inn one evening for dinner, food was good, service was great and happened to be the evening for half price bottles of wine. There were several restaurants within walking distance, although we did not make it to the restaurant onsite.
Kind of strange that we lost power (electrical breaker problem?) in our suite twice, once when making coffee and a second time using blow dryer. Staff at front desk were good and had this fixed fairly quickly. Overall the room felt a bit old and ours did not even have the wood plantations shutters as shown on internet. The bathroom was updated with granite and double vessel sinks. Although the area itself is scenic and relaxing and even though we are not particularly picky, the room really felt a bit small and dingy. Probably would not stay again.

Two nights stay here just isn't enough. The rooms are faboulous, fashioned as though inspired by boats and marinas (which indeed they are as the location is right beside a beautiful marina with awesome boats). The rooms are modern, huge, beamed with wood and have gorgeous views over either the marina or the central oasis-style grounds and pool. We had nibbles in the bar and it was kind of nice that at 7pm children are barred, making the bar a properly grown-up zone, for gentle drinks and nibbles accompanied by what mostly seem to be live cheesy jazz/blue combos. I liked this! But would love to go back in-season when the hotel's very own concert venues hosts proper big-name artists (Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin...) And the location is great - San Diego old town, Sea World etc just minutes away.

Easy access to everything, including a moonlight walk along the bay. All the ammenities with a big plus for us being a wonderful, hopping, lounge. We truly enjoyed ending our touristy days with a drink and dance at the lounge. They had live bands, blues bands, every night we were there, and each gave energy and life to the place. The hotel is great, but the lounge will bring us back.

We spent six nights here in December - got their standard king guest room facing the parking lot, a little bit of road noise during the daytime, but quiet at night because the traffic to Shelter island drops off. The property is well-kept, nicely landscaped. Lovely pool and hot tub, waterfalls and koi pond in the garden interior. We had a refrigerator and microwave in the room and mixed up sangria and sat on the viewing platforms overlooking the interior Shelter Island harbor several evenings - very serene, beautiful sunsets (going down behind Point Loma). King bed was comfortable. Quite a few good restaurants in walking distance. Had a fantastic Christmas Day buffet at Humphrey's Restaurant onsite - best buffet we've ever eaten - many fresh seafood entrees and fresh-squeezed orange juice in the mimosas (included in meal price). Great location overall - easy to get to Cabrillo National Monument, Point Loma/Sunset Cliffs, Mission Bay; short drive to downtown,Coronado Island, Zoo and Old Town. Easy access to freeway to get up to La Jolla and Torrey Pines. Also lovely to stroll through Shelter Island park and walkway along marina and bay. They also offer free bikes for two-hour use.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor, marina or garden view, away from pool and concert venue.

A friend and I stayed for three nights at the resort and can hardly wait to stay again. It is beautiful, restful, and they treat you well. It is clean, quiet, and the views are amazing. We got a great deal too. And from the hotel itself. No booking company needed. The you will love it.

We found this to be a very good deal for what we paid. We were only sleeping at the hotel and while we were very disappointed initially at the location of the room, across from the ice machine, bordering on the vending machines and facing the parking lot, it was immaculate and served our purpose well. Despite the location of the room, it was very quiet. The location of the hotel is very good in that it is close to a lot we wanted to do but away from the noise that so often accompanies a city stay.

The decor was nice - the room had recently been renovated and it showed. Good sized room and bathroom, comfortable pillows and bed. We did have a small patio area surrounded by tall plantings that gave a bit of privacy from the parking lot. The grounds were beautiful. I would definitely stay here again and at the great price we got, the room was definitely a good value.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the courtyard for a bit of a "view." While this hotel is close to the w...

Humphreys is very ideally located in San Diego for someone looking for a great getaway. It's close enough to the airport that they offer a free shuttle service (and E. (Elliot I think?) has fantastic recommendations for you on the ride there), but still nestled away enough that you don't feel like you're in the middle of a city - yet everything is still close by. It was perfect for me because I did not want to be near hundreds of tourists with kids going to SeaWorld and the zoo - I just wanted a peaceful vacation.

I travelled with my handicap step-mom and they were very polite and accommodating for her - so thank you to all the staff for their help with that! You can honestly tell that the staff love their jobs and I cannot emphasize enough how much I felt like I was at an island resort instead of being boxed in at a cookie cutter hotel.

For rooms, I recommend getting one that is towards the pier, and the suites looked amazing. I was on a budget though and stayed in a regular room. Despite the price (super cheap), the room was still very spacious, and included all the amenities that a traveler needs there for a 4 night stay. A little older, more noticeably in the bathrooms but the SUPER comfortable beds completely made up for it!

All in all, I am completely glad I read these review - it helped me make the decision and I strongly recommend others to book with Humphrey's also! Hint - I got a great deal with Expedia, couldn't find any with orbitz or bookit with Humphrey's.

Room Tip: check with Expedia for a discount
