We checked in on a recent Thursday, arriving early but not too concerned about doing so. We were told we would be called as soon as our room was ready. After a leisurely lunch we returned to the registration desk and were told that our room would be available between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm. I called Hilton Honors and requested assistance with the check in process as the staff at the hotel were not very accommodating. As a Diamond member I am usually treated much better at Hilton properties. Funny how my room became available almost immediately.

The hotel is old and could use some updating and care, but the location is very nice on Mission Bay road. We were traveling with another family and two three-year-old girls. The ground floor adjoining rooms opening onto a large lawn were wonderful. We could see fireworks from Sea World each night and were able to enjoy the pool, beach, and nearby parks.

The property's restaurant would like to pretend that it is a European style upscale venue with liveried waiters and slow service, but it is really nothing special, with slow service and unremarkable, overpriced food.

The final verdict is that our 4 nights were very nice, and we would likely stay again. Be advised though not to expect too much luxury and overpricing even by California standards.

My teenage daughter and I just spent three nights at the Hilton San Diego Resort & Spa for a girls get away. Because of our diamond member status we were upgraded to a king suite villa overlooking the water for the price of a standard room. That was nice. The room was large and included a pull out couch. The wall facing the water was entirely glass and opened wide to a nice sized balcony. Although the room was a bit stuffy I did not find it unpleasantly smelly. Opening the slider solves the problem however there are too many noises from late night partiers to EARLY morning gulls to leave it open over night. The TV didn't work on the third night, "no signal".
The pool area includes a large pool (unheated), a kiddie pool with fountain and colorful balls, two hot tubs, a waterfall, a restaurant with poolside service, fire pits, and games. Kids were crazy for it all. It looked like a great place to take your family with young children because you can grab a chaise and let the kids have free reign- it's all enclosed. If you do not have young children you may not find it as relaxing. Just across the walking/skating/biking path is the rental place for all kinds of recreational toys. (The water is not the Pacific. It is an inlet with warm, shallow, waveless water.) There is a lot of fun to be had without leaving the property. Unfortunately, if you want really good food you will have to leave the property. The club sandwich from the lunch menu was good and the complimentary continental breakfast was okay, but everything else we ordered was disappointing. If I had it to do over again I think I would just get a pizza from the olive (bar) during happy hour and skip anything from the menu for breakfast or dinner. Also. the service is SLOW. We finished our buffet breakfast and left without anyone having brought us water. To be fair, no one asked us if we wanted water until we were at least half way through our meal. We received a coupon for a free dessert with a dinner entree purchase but by the time we were asked about our choice we were over it and just wanted to leave.
We enjoyed the nightly fireworks over Sea World and did not mind sharing the hot tub with packs of 6-10 year old boys. They are entertaining.
Take note- there are additional fees. A resort fee: $27/night. A self-parking fee: $35/night. Also, they include a 20% gratuity on all spa services which you can adjust, if you want to verbally indicate so in front of the service provider. The restaurant bills come with suggested gratuities from 19%-22% printed on them.
Not sure this place is worth the cost if you have to pay full price.

It was difficult to choose between the "Pacific Terrace Hotel" (rated no 1 on Trip Advisor) and the Hilton. We chose the Hilton and made the right choice ! We also visited the Pacific Terrace hotel and it is beautiful BUT it has no restaurant and the neighbourhood is decidedly down-market with v few (if any) family restaurants (unless you count Taco-Bell). The Hilton is not perfect and yes the rooms are a bit dark but it's failings are more than made up for by:
- a fantastic restaurant (Acqua) which is World-class with a great Austrian Chef. The food is magnificent and the menu is varied. Service is amazing - especially Marie, a lovely French lady who made us feel so welcome. (Unlike the dark-haired hostess who was unsmiling and distant!).
- the pool is lovely (although cold) but Service round the pool by lovely, friendly attendants is fantastic
- right on the beach. 30 mins bike ride from SeaWorld. Have an activity centre with lots to doing you have kids
- shop on site that sells everything from tourist items to soda and wine

I would definitely come back if only for the restaurant!

The improvements that the hotel should consider:
- we had an ocean view villa but we were disappointed when we arrived because it was so dark and somber. The lights must have been 15 W lighting. We asked for extra lamps and I bought light bulbs at Target. C'mon guys! Just update the rooms to modern energy-efficient bright LED lighting and 60% of your negative reviews will disappear!
- heat the pool!
- there is a humidity problems in the rooms causing a slight (not over-whelming) damp smell so please update the a/c dehumidifying systems in the rooms if you are going to charge nearly $500 a room
- they charge $35 a night for you to park your car on the premises plus a resort fee On TOP of the room charges! C'mon Hilton. This makes people feel screwed!
- Finally, even though I love the Acqua restaurant , it was my twins birthday whilst we were at the resort and we asked the hotel if they could have a cake for dessert (dark-haired receptionist wasn't too helpful). Now... as a Gold Hilton Honors member spending $6000 on my 7 day stay at the resort and spending on average $240 a night at the restaurant, the cake was duly presented... but they charged me $40 for the small cake which I thought was a cheap. thing to do! It's only a small thing but it spoiled the experience a bit for me as it is the first restaurant, ever, that charged me anything for a kid's cake ( nothing fancy) when I was paying for a family meal.

Anyhow, I still think this is one of the best hotels in the San Diego area as well as the best restaurant.

Our room experience: stains on the curtains and bedspread, moist carpet, dirty balcony area (cigarettes and trash in the gutter space right in front) and located in an area of the property that looked like a communist housing block. One of my kids told me the bathroom smelled like cheese; to me, onions. We asked for a double room, not a double-double room...

The pool area is about the only thing nice that we could find--and the staff working the pool helpful.

High extra charges for parking and "resort fee"....incredible.

We had planned on staying three nights but got out immediately after the first and moved to the Loews Hotel in Coronado--much better!

Not sure if this is the general state of Mission Bay hotels--but we will not go back to this hotel or area again.

We read a number of reviews of this hotel before we stayed here. We were concerned by reviews that discussed a damp and musty feel to rooms, but encouraged by reviews that discussed an amazing, helpful staff. We decided we had to find out for ourselves and so came to the hotel with an open mind.

First of all, you should believe all the reviews that discuss a damp, musty odor—we definitely had that. In fact, I’d even add that the carpet in our room was damp to the touch (my socks even got a little wet walking around the room), swimsuits didn’t dry, and paper left on the desk curled up over night. I don’t think the A/C system takes humidity out of the air. We requested, and received, a dehumidifier. That helped and after two nights, we had dumped the bucket about five times. On the third day, we returned to find the dehumidifier had been taken out of our room--a huge disappointment--and we definitely noticed a difference. When we mentioned the dampness to hotel staff, they seemed genuinely puzzled and acted as though we were the first guests to mention this issue.

The hotel was on the water (Mission Bay, not the Pacific)…we had a waterfront room with a nice view and had a sliding glass door onto a patio that was just steps from the sand. Between our room and the sand, however, was a large biking/walking/skating path that is well used by locals. Additionally, when the hotel had a “s’mores” party, there were a lot of families and children running around and shouting in front of our room.

Positive things about the hotel included a great bell staff, a breakfast coupon (for Hilton Gold and Diamond members) good for $13 off breakfast, a large TV with good cable, and surprisingly fast internet speeds that you don’t have to re-log in to every day. I think our favorite thing about the hotel, though, was the restaurant. The food was delicious, and the wait staff did a great job meeting our every need.

The rooms lack accessible outlets…we had a hard time finding places to plug phones and computers in without moving furniture. The hotel also seems to want money at every turn. After charging a hefty rate for the room, they add on a resort fee ($22/day), and a parking fee ($35/night). Then there’s the “complimentary shuttle” to SeaWorld…complimentary only if you leave at 10:00 am and return at 4:15…otherwise, you pay $12. It’s $25 to the airport, but that isn’t available until after 9:00 am. Do you want to just relax by the pool in a cabana? That’s $100 for the day. And then there’s the cost for renting jet skis, bikes, etc. While the hotel was nice, we didn’t feel it was as nice as the price would indicate…heck, they didn’t even give us a new bar of soap in three days (even when we were down to just a sliver).

There were also a good number of small kids and families at the hotel, so we never had a chance to get in either of the two 5-person hot tubs as there were always kids in them. One day, the pool was closed because someone had pooped in it—a little more monitoring of the kids might help prevent this. A “no kids after 8pm rule” would be a nice thing for adult guests of the resort looking to relax in the evening.

To get to our room, we had to walk through industrial areas of the resort (see pictures). While we understand these areas are necessary, it would have been nice to not have to see these places every day on the way to breakfast considering we paid almost $400/night.

Room Tip: The Beachfront Villas walk are steps from the beach.

We're glad to have welcomed you to our resort and to hear that the experience was a mostly enjoyable one. We certainly take great pride in our guest services, so we're thrilled to hear these were a standout of your stay. That said, we do apologize if any of our pricing structures were less than clear, as we strive to be entirely transparent regarding these--both at the time of booking and at check-in. We'll certainly touch base with the team to ensure this is being done with consistency. We hope that you'll join us again and afford us the opportunity to showcase some of our many other amenities and rooms on site that are bound to impress. Our tower offers some spectacular, scenic views of the waterfront and nearby SeaWorld fireworks, with minimal essence from the waterfront. We're confident in our ability to showcase a suite to mirror our hospitality, and we hope for the chance to host you again.

For $280 a night it was not worth it. The location is excellent. The pool is nothing special. Old. No slide. The room had dirty carpets, mildew and mold on he bathroom walls and the rooms smelled musty.
