“Nice Hotel Super Management and Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2014

It's our second time in Palomar Hotel in San Diego. Both of my trips with my family had great memories, thanks to Mr. Johnson Menezes Director of Front Office and the reception, they did their best to accomodate us regarding our needs.
We hope to come back.
Murat Bitran

Room Tip: The rooms are not very big. The suites should be considered if you need more space.

Thanks Murat for such a nice review. Johnson is our Rock Star here. I'm really happy he was able to make both of your stays with us so comfortable.

We look forward to seeing you again next year.

Warm regards,
Mark

My comments mostly relate to their maintenance staff. I got back to my room around dinner time to find the door open, with the heating/air-conditioning unit in pieces all over the floor and nobody around. I walked up and down the hall and didn't see anyone. I closed the door, got changed (still nobody) and called the front desk. After 5-10 min the maintenance guy knocked on the door. I was rather annoyed that my room (with computer and other stuff) was left open for who knows how long. The guy didn't think it was a problem and said they had hotel security cameras to watch things (his attitude seemed to further anger me - he didn't think there was a problem). I hadn't asked for any work on the heating or AC system and seeing the mess was a surprise. I would have been even annoyed if I had plans to use the room at that time.
I left for dinner and got back to a very hot room (after finishing work on the AC, he never turned on the AC and the room was about 82 degrees. They also left some empty boxes on the floor for work the maintenance staff did.
I talked to the manager at the hotel who was quite apologetic, but feel like the whole episode was a not right. Before taking apart the heating or AC unit - they should have alerted me and clearly don't leave my door open walking away for a period of time and finally they should not leave their mess behind. On the positive side, seems nothing was stolen from my room.
Other comment: The room had a large (filthy) window. The window (outside) looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years with bird droppings and dirt.
The room itself was spacious, nice location, small work out room (but it didn't seem to get much use).

Dear Alj1982,

We are very sorry for the issue with our maintenance staff. As our manager stated this was a mistake made by our staff and not our standard operating procedure. I have personally followed up with our maintenance team. I am very sorry that this ruined your stay.

Sincerely,
Mark

While the property is in a slightly dodgy area of gaslamp, it's a lovely hotel. The rooms are nice, clean with beautiful bathrooms, the front desk staff were helpful and the bar was excellent. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Lovely modern, upbeat hotel. Our room was fine but could have done with extra wardrobe space as we were there for 7 days. The bathroom was big and had a great shower. Having free wifi and an ipod docking station was a nice touch as was the free wine evening 5-6pm, Good location for restaurants and bars and for getting around town. Would recommend this place to others.

Thanks Pat658 for such a great review. I'm happy you were able to spend a week with us and enjoy our wine hour and location. I hope you tried Saltbox for the best food and craft cocktails in town.

Cheers,
Mark

This was like an amazing cross of hip and homey -- the people plus atmosphere plus just walking in feels luxurious; there's a giant swing door opened by a doorman, a wine hour (free coffee and tea in morning) and the staff is really polite efficient and helpful. these guys were actually funny and good at their jobs - no attitude - completely there for you. the room is totally new, great views, simple but in a sophisticated way. the rooftop pool and bar is fabulous, and so is the restaurant. the amenities are great... the staff really is what makes this a top notch place. they even loan bikes to tour the city - and gave great recommendations. a committed hard working luxury property.

We checked in for our 8 day stay at The Palomar. First impressions of the staff were in place and evident before we even left the UK, with prompt and helpful emails being sent to us answering our questions and queries as we booked. This approach continued when we arrived at Reception - simply great friendly service, both from the porters and Reception staff after our long flight from England.
We had a fabulous loft style apartment on 17th floor with views over the city in three directions which bowled us over. The room was really spacious and had everything one could wish for. Staff knew it was our upcoming 30th anniversary and kindly provided some very thoughtful treats - wine and choc dipped strawberries arrived just as we did!
The bed was divine, really comfy with big fluffy pillows, big bathroom had 2 sinks with plenty of toiletries provided, shower was spacious and had plenty of power. Two dazzling bath robes (leopard and tiger striped) made it easy to lounge around in the living area whilst the TV offered plenty of new release films and good choice of TV channels if you felt like relaxing.

The hotel is situated adjacent to the historic Gaslamp district with absolutely every eating choice you could want and reasonably priced too due to the competition. Try The Field, a Dublin based pub offering Irish dishes at great prices - and the mountains of food are delicious! But don't discount the food at the hotel either - breakfast and their Eggs Benedict were some of the best ever tasted (thanks for the recommendation of Steve!)

Another helpful hint is that theTrolley stops just yards from the hotel front door which offers really good transport links all over the city, including the tourist spots of SD Zoo and Seaworld. An inclusive day ticket offering unlimited travel for the day is just $5 (buy a $2 Compass card and top it up daily with $5 during your stay) includes travel right down to the borders of Mexico (great Mall there at rock bottom prices for the English travellers!).

All of the staff at the Palomar we came into contact with were simply great and excelled at providing truly excellent customer service - however special thanks must go to Gilbert the doorman whose cheerful smile greeted us each morning and who provided some great tips about how to get where we were going, to Patty who was a real gem in helping us with anything and everything we wanted, to Tamara for helping with our room selection, to the Reception staff for trying to track down a much wanted CD from the local record stores (thanks again to Patty on that one!) and to the housekeeping staff who kept us spick and span throughout our stay. Mike the concierge was a darling too and it was especially nice for us to be able to thank Leo the Hotel Director and to congratulate him on the excellent staff he has.
Would thoroughly recommend the Palomar to anyone and we will hopefully be back!!

Room Tip: Loft style apartments are wonderful!
