“Enjoyed our stay.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

Stayed here at the end of August. While at a nearby restaurant, it became apparent that we were really close to hospitals as there were a number of ambulances coming and going. Either it was a quiet night or we were exhausted from spending the day at the zoo - we couldn't hear any sirens once we were in the hotel room.

This is the only hotel in the Hillcrest neighborhood and the reason we stayed here. The hotel is surrounded by hospitals and medical facilities. Hillcrest is a gay neighborhood that starts on the next block (and welcoming to all) with trendy restaurants, shops, coffee bars, grocery stores, nightclubs, bookstores and more. It deserves a better hotel than this one. We stayed 3 nights over Labor Day weekend. Housekeeping forgot to clean our room and only came once which was late on the day before we checked out (the front desk apologized). There was no soap to clean dishes when we arrived or soap for the dishwasher. Also, no sponge or cleaning rag for kitchen. Furniture is just okay. It was muggy outside and difficult to get both living room and bedroom to cool on the first night. We ended up placing a towel over the air conditioner in the living room to force more air into the bedroom at night (same air conditioner is between living room and bedroom). Once we were in the room it was fairly quiet but you can hear some sounds from neighbors. Hallways were noisy with sounds echoing from the central pool area and nearby freeway. Refrigerator was full size and kitchen was pretty basic. We didn't try the continental breakfast. The hotel pictures are out of date - building is now one color and looks drab, which doesn't fit the look of this upscale, rainbow neighborhood.

Dear Kauai-Guy,
Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience at our hotel on Trip Advisor. I would like to apologize that the hotel was not up to par. I will follow through by sharing your comments with the appropriate departments to help improve our service levels for you and future guests. We are working on a plan to upgrade our hotel with more sound proof/efficient windows and doors and most likely will be undergoing a complete room renovation sometime in the very near future that will address the issues you mentioned. We look forward to welcoming you back as our guest in the near future.

In the heart of HILLCREST--great!.
I was able to walk everywhere.
Near Balboa park & zoo.
The service was great & the rooms airy & clean.
Great breakfasts too.
My only complaint is the parking area can get full & the spaces are VERY narrow

Room Tip: the front desk will work with you...very nice

Dear Good Stuff NJ,
Thank you for staying at our property during your trip to San Diego. We are glad to hear you enjoyed the location and all that Hillcrest has to offer. Our staff works very hard to ensure each guest has an enjoyable and comfortable stay. In regards the parking structure we are consistently looking for ways to improve and enhance our guest's experience and your comments will certainly assist us in future decisions. Once again thank you and it would be a pleasure to have you as our guests again.

I had a great stay at the Sommerset hotel. The rooms were very spacious and clean, with a balcony and breakfast was included. Great location, right in the beautiful Hillcrest area. Walking distance to the zoo, restaurants and nightlife.

The staff were very helpful, although I did get some confusing directions a couple of times.

I was looking for a hotel that would accommodate our family of five when I came across Sommerset Suites. First of all they upgraded us to the executive suite for no extra charge. The suite was beautiful! It seemed more like an apartment than a hotel. It was also close to the zoo which was a great plus for us. The only thing that stopped me from giving it 5 stars was the location to the hospitals. Our room really had no view at all. However, the noise wasn't too bad. We slept fine. The breakfast was standard fare, but no complaints. Someone had complained about the pool. It was a bit small, but we practicly had it to ourselves. Overall, I loved the hotel, just not crazy about location.

It's located in the heart of Hillcrest, San Diego's "gayborhood." All the great restaurants and shopping nearby. The front desk was always very helpful and hooked me up with an all day site seeing tour. The room was quite specious but the view wasn't anything pretty.

Clean, friendly, accommodating, welcoming. Great breakfast. I'm not sure why Vegas Buff calls it no frills...it was a good, basic continental plus amazing waffles. Wonderful Friday BBQ's--free--what hotel does that? It's pet friendly and not outrageously expensive. It's has a wonderful central location--easy access to major highways while not being ON them. The ONLY problem someone might be concerned with is the noise from the nearby hospital activity, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be; perhaps we have an easier time tuning those things out in light of the rest of the hotel benefits. We had a long-term stay (2 1/2 weeks), so the kitchen was such a benefit to cut down on having to eat out every meal (expensive!) and we were able to accommodate a cat. The beds were super comfy. Thank you to all the staff.
