“Great beach location ”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2014

Had a wonderful week at Pacific Beach staying at Pacific Terrace. We had a sea view 2nd floor mini suite room. Hotel is the best location at Pacific Beach. Great ocean views and good facilities at the hotel. Not a "cheap" stay but you get what you pay for. Pool is great for kids as heated. Staff are great and always willing to help. We loved it.

At the last minute we got a few days off and decided to head south (we live an hour north of LA). We booked an executive suite and requested third floor north side, which we received. Our room was The St. Lucia suite room 325, and it was approximately 750 sq ft. VERY spacious for our family of four (two teenage boys, mom and dad). Two queens, sleeper sofa, kitchenette with fridge, microwave and Keurig coffee maker, plates, cutlery etc. Had a kitchen table and a massive bathroom with a large jacuzzi tub. GREAT ROOM FOR FAMILIES! Well worth the extra $$$. It was considered a partial ocean view which concerned us at booking, but we were pleasantly surprised to have a truly spectacular ocean view. North side is preferable in my opinion, as the south side overlooks public restrooms and has more traffic. The rooms are very clean. Tommy Bahama decorated and has TB bath products as well, which are nice. Comfy beds. No complaint at all with the room.

Pacific Beach itself is a busy beach town. As we drove in, we felt it was a tad bit sketchier than we expected...it is certainly not as upscale as other beach communities such as Laguna, La Jolla or Coronado Island. However, we wound up feeling safe as we walked about. There is a wonderful walking/biking path that runs along the beach and pretty much ends at the hotel. We'd get up early each morning and hop on the hotel's complimentary beach cruiser bikes. It is maybe three miles or so to the end and it's lots of fun to check out the beach houses and people as well as enjoy the beautiful ocean view. Lots of casual places to eat. We took out Thai food from Thai City one night, which was pretty good. Also ate at Bite of Boston for lobster rolls (small compared to what I've had on Cape Cod). Tower 23 is fine dining on the beach and is a block away. Aside from that, no need to bring anything dressy to wear.

Hotel itself is small, but nice. Not a luxury property....location is what bumps it up to four stars. Staff were kind and accommodating. Included in the mandatory resort fee are bicycles (both adult and small children's), boogie boards, sand toys, beach chairs and umbrellas. They have plenty and don't seem to run out. Hotel sits up on cliff above Pacific Beach. Stair access is easy. There are on duty life guards. Beach was quite crowded as the weather was wonderful during our stay, but still plenty of room for all. Hotel's pool is small but directly overlooks the ocean. Property is not far from Sea world and San Diego Zoo. Approximately 25-30 minutes to Legoland and Animal Safari Park. Hour and a half to Disneyland.

Overall a good experience!

We stayed at the Pacific Terrace at the tail end of a trip that took in LA , Santa Barbara and Vegas , Unfortunately we had stayed in 3 five star hotels and Pacific Terrace was pitched in this group . As you drive towards the hotel and the arrival minutes tick down on the satnav you do start to get a slightly uneasy feel . We were expecting something more akin to a resort hotel on the beach rather than what was more of traditional infill hotel on the beach ... that was probably our bad on the research front ..... there are plenty of negatives if you want to dig your heels in .... its not cheap ....prices are pitched at 5* rates. Our room was pleasant , but the bathroom small with an overhead shower. the restaurant only served a modest buffet style breakfast .. no lunch or dinner. If you wanted room service or poolside they could order food from a local bar for you , giving rise to variable delivery times .Cocktails tended to be carton/can based . As mentioned at the beginning the location wasn't as ropey as Venice beach , but it was no Santa Monica either . Still struggling with the concept of ordering takeaway burritos and pizza and eating them with other families in the restaurant. Access to the spa was via the underground carpark ...... in your robe......... knock through a wall please guys !

Here's the thing though ... the staff whilst laid back , are super friendly and helpful ,just dealing with them chills you out , the walk to the beach is minimal , and they provide everything you will need for the beach .. towels , chairs, brollys, boogie boards etc . You only have to ask . The pool , whilst small is warm , hot tub boiling and the lounger covers luxurious . Trust me kids LOVE eating takeaway pizza and out of cartons whilst playing connect 4 in a hotel restaurant.

So there was a divided opinion in our family ........ Dad couldn't reconcile the cost with the hotel......Mum was faintly bemused at what had happened to her 5* vacation but the kids seemed chilled and Dads face was amusing as he ate his taco out of the polystyrene container..... the kids however ... loved it . beach, sea seaworld and takeaway food every night ..... bliss .........

Oh yeah , I'm still trying to come to terms with the vouchers booklet as well .........coupons at a luxury resort

Room Tip: beach view all day long

The hotel staff is very professional, friendly and respectful. You feel very welcomed the minute you arrive. You can hear the ocean waves crashing when you sleep at night! So relaxing! The pool area is perfectly placed overlooking the ocean. Great views of the sunset! The beach chairs, umbrellas, etc... are a great connivence. We walked to The Fishery (upscale restaurant) all the way to Draft at Mission Beach. This hotel is in a great location on Pacific Beach! You MUST grab breakfast on the deck at Kono's !

Room Tip: Ocean view 3rd floor!

We came to San Diego for three nights and stayed one night at Tower23 and two nights at Pacific Terrace. The two hotels are very close to each other. Both have lots of surfing at the beach in front of them. Both are very nice. But there are lots of differences too. While Tower23 is sleek and modern, Pacific Terrace is beautiful in a more traditional way, with dark wood furniture and rich colors. They don't have a full restaurant, although they do have a breakfast buffet for $14 (there were only a very few gluten-free options on it, so I preferred the breakfast at Tower23). Pacific Terrace has a pool, which is a nice addition that Tower23 doesn't have. If I had brought my kids, we would have preferred Pacific Terrace because the rooms are a little larger, they have a pool, and it seems a little more family-friendly. The ocean views are great. We stayed on the second floor overlooking the pool and had no issues.

Hi - thanks for writing! We do enjoy having Tower 23 so close....guests that want a pool area choose to stay with us, but their restaurant is so nice, many of our guests walk down for a glass of wine or a nice dinner in the evenings. I will pass your lovely comments on to the team here at the Pacific Terrace - thanks!

Right on the water in Pacific Beach. Clean, spacious. GREAT bed - most comfortable on which we've slept in years.
Staff was friendliest we've met in quite some time.Treated us like family. All - from receptionists to housekeeping to maintenance - went out of their way to ensure we were enjoying ourslves.
Convenient to all of S.D., if you must leave this beautiful beach, via Grand or Garnet Aves and the Five.
La Jolla and Mission Bay on either side of this neat section of Pacific Beach.
Beautiful churches within walking distance.
Very cool fire dance on Friday evening.
We'll be back!

Room Tip: Try to pick a room facing the beach on an upper floor. Get the $15/day resort fee - Includes bikes...

During our recent 10 day trip to explore the CA coast, our stay at the Pacific Terrace was our final stop and we did save the best for last! We had a great room with plenty of space for the 4 of us including 2 kids. The service was exceptional and loved their coupon book book offering many extras for the hotel and surrounding area. We would highly recommend and will definitely stay again in the future!

Room Tip: Ocean front on 2nd or 3rd floor
