“Great location and excellent value in heart of the gaslamp district.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2012 via mobile

This was an awesome little gem of a hotel in the gaslamp. I really can't say enough good things.

To start, I booked one of the super small mobile rooms through a website for under $100. The room was tiny! Calling the bed full was sayin a lot. And there was no view- we had a window that faced a ventalation area in the center of the building. (Which was good for sleeping -less noise.).
That aside, the room had a coffee maker with coffee, microwave and fridge, as well as a nicely laid out decent size bathroom.

The location of this hotel is purrrrfect! You have all of the gaslamp at your doorstep, with 5th street right at the corner. A straight 10 or 15 walk down Broadway gets you to all of the waterfront including the ferry docks to coronado island. If your really adventurous, you can jog/run to the start of balboa park in about 10-15 min.
Also - the rooftop is amazing! Free continental breakfast every morning. Don't expect bacon and eggs but they had a decent selection of pastries, cereal, toast, fruit and bevys. It's also open until 11 pm if you want to bring your own bevys and food up there.
There's a melting pot fondue restaurant attached (we didn't go) and a cute wine 'club' that had food and entertainment (burlesque) show on Friday nights.
All the staff was very friendly. It was an old bank so its very old school-think marble and glass walls and halls. The hotel rooms must have been bankers offices because many have brass letter slots. (Ours didn't because I'm guessing it was a storage closet - ha!:)
All in all, I'd totally come back here.
Two caveats-
1) it was LOUD in our hotel room (read bass booming) until probably midnight. The wine club turns into a jumping club around 10. This didn't bother us because we were out all day and tired anyhow, but we heard an older couple complaining in the mornin about it. So if this bothers you request a very high floor or stay elsewhere.
2) The valet parking is $30 a night. If you fly in, a cab from the airport is only going to run you around $15.
I would definately stay here again!

Thank you so much for your review of your recent stay at the Gaslamp Plaza Suites. You indicated you had a reserved a room on a mobile site and that the room was tiny. Yes, the mobile sites offers a sleep 2 accommodation and these rooms are smaller than the rest of our units. You do have all the rest of the amenities that the rest of the rooms offer as well as the complimentary continental breakfast we serve on our rooftop terrace daily. If you are budget minded, then this is a good alternative to the larger and more expensive rooms we offer. We are hoping we will have a room alternative for everyone.
Once again, thank you for your feed back and welcome back!

We chose to stay in the Gaslamp Plaza Suites because of its proximity to the convention center and it is in a historic area of San Diego. We were for warned of the noise factor and therefore we requested for a higher floor, which was provided. We arrived in the early afternoon after a tiring 8-hour flight from the East coast but we were told that check-in time was 4:00 PM, no exceptions. Therefore we waited for another three hours before we could go into our room. The hotel was and old renovated building. No smoking and no pets were allowed in the hotel. The key card used to enter our room does not work consistently. Our room on the 9th floor was spacious, clean for the bed (sheets were clean and changed daily; also no bed bugs), and living room floor and furnishings. However, the bathroom sink and tub needed better daily cleaning and maintenance. Our 9th floor room was less noisy even during the weekend nights. For an expensive hotel, the complimentary breakfast was minimal and less desirable compared to less expensive hotels that offer this amenity. Fortunately we had other alternatives for breakfast outside this hotel. The hotel also did not have fitness facilities. Instead, a discounted rate to a fitness gym a few blocks north of the hotel was offered. We felt that it was inconvenient and not practical. The front desk and bell services were professional, attentive and courteous. In spite of the “rough” nature of the Gaslamp area, we did not experience any safety issues in this hotel.

Room Tip: Higher floors are relatively quieter. Be aware of late check in time 4:00 PM!

So lucky were we to get week at the Gaslamp Plaza Suites! A historic building with marble and brass, and well built in a PERFECT LOCATION. We were right in the Gaslamp Quarter with tons of very cool restaurants, walking distance to the Convention Center, a huge mall, and only two blocks from the public bus/trolley lines. We had a lovely accommodation with two double beds in one room, and a pullout sofa in the other, two full baths, two minifridges, a microwave and plates/utensils, was perfect for us. Bonus: there is a Melting Pot on the first floor of the building...one night we popped in just for dessert fondue!! Merry is the lady who gives a welcome meeting on Mondays and clues you in to everything you need to know, including trolleys, buses, tours..lots of fun. No pool or actual restaurant, but every morning there is a FREE continental breakfast on the amazing rooftop, with views of the harbor, Coronado, downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter...nice extra! There is a RiteAid and CVS around the corner, so we stocked our fridge with sodas. Great LOCATION to head out to the fabulous Zoo, where a new baby Panda is just taking his first steps. Loved LaJolla and the seals! Love this lovely city with no humidity:)

Room Tip: We had the last room on the 10th floor and it was so quiet!

We stayed in a studio suite on the 9th floor where we could see right down to the water! The extra room with the couch and coffee table made us feel like we were at home. There was a small "kitchen" are where I could make my breakfast every morning. The bathroom was clean but had just one sink. No problem really for my husband and I. The bed was comfortable and the sleeping area was big enough for 2 nightstands. The rooms had blackout shades which kept out the light but not the noise from the bars. We didn't mind that either though but you can here the noise on the weekend. My husband went up to the rooftop for a complimentary breakfast sometimes and the view from there was awesome! We DID NOT park at the Gaslamp Plaza Suites though and instead went to Parkopedia on 6th and K Street where we usually paid $10.00 a night. Our total for the week was $90.00 for 7 nights where as most guests paid $210.00 for the valet parking at the hotel. Safe parking and we enjoyed the short walk in the morning and at night. It was very safe. We would definitely go back here again. The location was great for all the places that we went to.

We stayed here Sept 30 & Oct. 1. The suite rooms are very nice and spacious. Our suite decor did not look like the picture above - it was dated but clean and nice. I liked all the beautiful marble everywhere in the lobby and hallways but it all felt like it needed a good scrubbing - looking just a bit worn. The building is old and I liked learning the history of it and the old pictures but felt it needed a bit of cleaning in the public areas. The front desk clerks were very helpful and friendly as were the bellmen. Good location for the gaslamp district.

Pluses: Really nice rooms, very elegant with kitchenettes, HDTVs, Sofa & Desk. Great views from the rooftop terrace. Nice staff.

Minuses: No Free WiFi, pay WiFi rather slow. Breakfast was mostly pastries, breads, cereals, with no yogurt or protein other than peanut butter. Noisy streets that can be heard through the windows (at least in my room).

But overall, I really liked the place and thoroughly enjoyed my stay there and in San Diego.

Room Tip: The windows don't seem to block much sound, so high floors are probably best.

We booked this hotel as part of a Southwest Airlines package for a very reasonable rate. The room was very nice. The hotel had a rooftop garden with great views of the city and was a great place to sit and enjoy a cocktail. The good news is that is located right in the gaslamp district with close access to restaurants etc. The bad news is that it is close to the bars when they close at 2 am. We had a second floor room and the crowd noise was unbelievable and it lasted for about an hour. Maybe higher floor would be better. Lastly, the continental breakfast was pretty lame.
