I, my husband and my daughter were just there last Thursday (10/15). We walked up and down 4th and 5th Ave not being able to decide where to eat. Wanted something different than the places we have eaten (Old Spaghetti or Rock Bottom). Getting hungry and tired we walked by the Trattoria La Bocca and were greeted by the Hostess on the street. Looked at the menu and the spaghetti dishes did not seem overpriced (after some of the menus we looked at anyways) and decides to sit there and give it a try. We were seated outside which was nice, but pretty much all the places in Gaslamp had outside seating, so that is not a huge plus. I should have been suspicious after noticing that only one table had customers, which turned out to be the owner having drinks with a female. No one else with the streets full of people walking up and down – hmm.. should have given me a clue. Service was not bad. Water and hostess were friendly and brought drinks and food promptly. Food on the other hand was nothing o write home about. We ordered 2 different veal dishes – Veal (Viello) Portobello and Veal Rossini. Both dishes we re not that great, contained little meat (veal steak was almost paper thin) and the portions were really small. The kids menu had a couple of items on there and we ordered the Chicken Parmesan – the portion was larger than the veal dishes, but all there was rigatoni pasta with tons of tomato sauce (tasted like out of the jar, just warmed up) and a piece of chewy chicken. My daughter who loves Italian food and had never complained about anything Italian she has eaten, had a couple of bites and said she did not like it. Over all – overpriced, not worth going there and spending your time and money and walking out still hungry. Go someplace else, possibly not in the Gaslamp quarter.
