“Great Christmas vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2013

We got a great rate to stay at this clean and modern property over Christmas week. The location is fantastic and we had a nice view of the Coronado Bay Bridge. Most importantly to us, they gladly welcomed our two Golden Retriever "kids" who travel with us. All of us enjoyed our stay!

Great hotel, great location, great service. I highly recommend it! Staff was friendly and efficient. Location is close to restaurants too many to count. Easy access to highway and San Diego attractions.

We stayed here for 1 night in December after spending a couple days sailing around San Diego. The hotel was very nice. Our room faced the harbor and was on the 2nd highest floor, so we had a lovely view of the Gas Lamp and the harbor so we could watch boats sailing in and out. The convention center is right outside the front door, and you can definitely tell this property is geared to conventioneers --- it is LARGE and a bit sterile (lacking character). That said, we found the hotel very comfortable, the staff very helpful and inviting, and the breakfast buffet was wonderful. We spent about 4 hours at the pool on the one morning we were there. It was a very nice pool with perfect water temperature (despite it being December and 50-60 degrees outside). They did have the kids water slide closed which did disappoint my kids. There are also two hot tubs that were quite comfortable. We were able to get a great rate for the Sunday night we were there, I am not sure how the rates are during busier days or conventions. So for the price we paid it was an extremely good value. Parking is paid and is not cheap (but that is becoming expected at most downtown hotels). Hotel is walking distance to the Gas Lamp district which was very nice for going out for dinner. We stayed on the night of the San Diego Parade of Lights --- it was a short walk out to the park where we had a great view of the passing by decorated boats...so much fun!

Stayed at the Hilton for a week for a business conference. The hotel is right on the bay front and you can run from the hotel almost as far as the airport past the Midway carrier and the other expensive marine hardware on the bay. The rooms are plenty big enough and the generally the food and bar service is good. The gym was large enough for everyone to get a cardio machine of their choice. The hotel is a short walk into the night life area of San Diego. My only gripe with the hotel was that it just did not feel special in any way. There was no character to the place. Maybe it was down to not have very large communal areas to chill out.

All in all a decent place albeit not a huge amount of character.

Room Tip: High floor

We were looking to enjoy our "babymoon" and booked a last minute trip to San Diego. We came here on a one-day stop on a cruise previously and loved the boardwalk area.

PROS - The location was close to Gaslamp Quarter so if you want to check out a lot of restaurants nearby, it's a great location - 5-10 minute walk will give you many options.

We also checked out the Spa which was very nice. The therapist was very friendly.

CONS - There were more cons than I anticipated. Having worked in the hotel industry, it was a little bit unsettling even though I give every hotel a benefit of the doubt. Upon our online reservation, we were given an option to select an upgrade request based on availability and my husband chose the option to upgrade to one bedroom executive suite "just for fun". We know it was just a request based on availability, but if it was available, it would be $82 extra per night. Upon check-in, the front desk agent advised him that the executive suite was available, but it would be $160 extra per night. When he told him that his email noted the $82 rate, the agent checked with his manager and came back saying that room is now not available. One must have to wonder if they just did not want to give it to us for the lower rate.

There were also promotions in our key packet which we looked at after a couple of days during our stay because we were too busy. The front desk agent should have explained what was inside the key packet as most times, it's just a key and room number in the key packet. We did use the hotel facilities and were disappointed that we were not able to take advantage of additional savings.

Also, the floor beside my bed was damp and although I am glad the room was clean when we checked in, it should have not been ready for check-in if that was the case. Who likes to walk around in wet socks?

All in all, I expected a lot better in the service and in the hotel. There were many options for accommodations around should we go visit San Diego again in the future.

Room Tip: Try asking for rooms facing the boardwalk - we had a view of the Dole shipyard.

I loved having my honeymoon here. The hotel went above and beyond to ensure me and my wife had an amazing honeymoon and experience. I want to take her here again just for the heck of it even though we live in San Diego.
