“Old fashioned luxury”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

So much more interesting than a chain hotel, and within walking distance of the Capitol building. I would have liked to learn more about the history of this historic building. The suite was marvelous, but not necessarily quiet. I travel with ear plugs and the noise didn't bother my spouse. We really enjoyed our stay.

Only one block from the State Capitol building and you can see it from most guest rooms. You can learn more on the history by going to our website. The link to the site is on our Tripadvisor homepage. There is a lot history in the walls of the Senate Suites.

Senate Suites is the *only* lodging anywhere near the Kansas Capitol building, and is undoubtedly quite bustling during the short legislative sessions. When we visited, it was very quiet; The staff is low-key, pleasant, and helpful; the building is clean and well-maintained, and our suite ($99) was spacious, well-appointed, and comfortable. The rooms themselves are converted luxury apartments in a stuccoed fake Tudor style, built in the 1920s but fully modernized (with good sense in maintaining original ambiance), with the lowest floor (below reception) reorganized to allow for large social functions. There are nice touches throughout, including plantings and bronzes. The degree of professional smoothness was surprising in such an unusual property until we learned that the building is privately owned and managed, but the hotel services are underpinned by Marriott (wouldn't have known except a visiting manager was wearing a Marriot polo shirt). There is no restaurant, as it's such a small property (the nearest is a few blocks away, and the neighborhood around the Capitol is fairly barren and sketchy); the continental buffet was just adequate and hence only four stars. Arrival can be a touch perplexing, as the grounds and view from street are not typical hotel, but street signage is adequate (lobby on north side, with small cut-out in curb for initial parking). If you have any reason to stay near the Capitol, this is the only place, both literally and figuratively (visit the Capitol building; beautiful inside, from better days in Kansas, and has famous John Brown mural ... I actually ran into the governor alone on the street, and gave him some needed advice hehe!).

Room Tip: Third floor suite on NE corner has best view of Capitol dome.

Wow! What a great review. You could be a travel writer. You are correct that the hotel is bustling during the legislative sessions and it is not uncommon to "bump" into the Governor, Senators, and House congressman.

One correction I would like to make is that we are not associated with Marriott in any way. There may have been a guest with a Marriott polo but they must have been at the hotel for the excellent customer service and comfort!!

Thank you again for the great review. We appreciate your business.

In general, the hotel was very nice. Room was perfect and bed was very comfortable. Water pressure in shower was amazing! Staff was very friendly and helpful. What we didn't like was the free breakfast. Scrambled eggs were from a bag, not fresh. Waffle mix was sour. Breakfast was not 'quality', what you would expect from a hotel like The Senate. I would have preferred a discount on the room rather than getting a 'free' breakfast. Would like to see them make "fresh" eggs and make major improvements on the 'breakfast'. Our room had a balcony but the rails were damaged and looked a little unsafe and neglected, needs repair badly. We like staying at The Senate but maybe next time we're in Topeka, we'll consider another hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms not facing the capital building are quieter. Felt safer parking in back area of hotel.

Thank you for the response. We are looking into your comments regarding the eggs and waffle mix. The eggs are similar to scrambled eggs at most hotels. Our goal is to give a great start to the day and we recognize that breakfast is the important part of that process.

Not exactly what we had been expecting but that is not a bad thing. When our GPS told us we had arrived, we weren't certain where our hotel was. We almost parked in a private lot as we couldn't see where the entrance was but eventually we did find parking right near the door. The reason for the confusion is that this had previously been an apartment complex (built 1928) that has since been converted to hotel suites. It did not look like a typical hotel from outside.
Once inside, I have to admit that it is in need of some refurbishing--the carpets are not new, the floors squeak, and our room had an odd odour. You must go up to the 2nd floor to the Registration desk but there is an elevator.
Our room had two bedrooms, one smaller than the other. The larger room had an ensuite bathroom that is the only bathroom--not fancy but the vanity has plenty of space. Our room did not have a kitchen, not that we needed one. There is a fridge and a microwave.
It was so nice for us to have our own rooms and the beds were comfortable. We enjoyed the small balcony off the living room where we relaxed, sipped tea, and read until the mosquitoes drove us inside. We watched the big screen TV on a couch and chair that probably dated back to the 1980s, but were comfortable.
The staff deserve special mention. The young man who checked us in was friendly and welcoming and he offered us cookies (on a tray at the desk). The woman at check-out tried her best to help us find a souvenir shop that would be open at the time we were leaving and chatted about living here in the state's capitol. Speaking of which, from the hotel you can see the capitol building and this woman stated that many senators and other politicians stay at this hotel because of its proximity to the capitol building.
Breakfast was typical and served in what looked like a large meeting room. Many patrons were watching the TV and chatting.
This is not a fancy, modern hotel but it has a charm and history that we found appealing. Take a look at the metal statues inside and outside that were charming.

Thank you for the review. You are not the first person to get confused when pulling into the parking lot! Our boutique hotel definitely does not fit the "hotel" mold. We do our best to keep the old charm feel that is relaxing to business travelers and vacationers alike. I especially appreciate your comments about Jeremy and the staff. We pride ourselves on our customer service and our one on one personal attention.

Come back and see us soon.

My family had never been to the Capital. I booked a couple of rooms and requested one room facing the Capital at night. The rooms are fantastic!, My family was very surprised on the size of the rooms, there is a bedroom, kitchen, living room and the bathroom, hugh walk in closet's. I will stay there anytime that I go to Topeka, They loved the view. About the cleanliness the toilet paper that was on the roller had been wet, not sure by what and looked bad. I just changed it out with the new roll everything was fine after that. If you have to stay in Topeka this is the place to stay!

Thank you so much for the kind response. We are glad you enjoyed your stay. Now that the Capitol is a couple short months from being completely renovated, it is really starting to look great; especially at night. Our rooms definitely have the best views in Topeka being right across the street.

Come back and see us soon.

The room was very nice, kitchen sink faucet had very little water coming out. Coffee pot was the cheapest you can get, leaked when you poured. I have never paid thru the travel site and then was charged at check in for same amount as incindental fee which will return when my bank agrees. So this room was a double charge until my bank accepts returns

Thank you for the response. We have taken a look at the coffee pot and ordered a replacement. I apologize that we did not explain the check in policy clearly for you upon your arrival. Typical with almost all hotels, we "authorize" a credit card for incidentals and any potential damages that might happen during a stay. Upon check-out, the authorization is removed. If using a credit card, the money is placed back on the card almost immediately. If you were using a debit card, the bank will remove that money from your account for a short period of time. It is not given to the hotel but placed into an authorization account for the hotel to ensure that there is money on the card. Different banks have different rules for how long the money will be removed from an account. Nothing was ever charged to your card by the hotel. I will use this as an opportunity to train and coach the staff.

The night we arrived there was a substitute desk clerk who didnt know where the rooms were and had us walk all over the hotel and switched our room twice because he couldn't find it and they didnt have a map or anyhing for him. We spent over 20 mins just trying to find a room! I mentioned it to the manager that next morning and she simply said "Yeah, he needs to be trained more."

The bathtub felt like we were going to fall through it. My 70lb son made it creak and make all kinds of sounds!

Breakfast ended too soon for us to eat anything that morning. I wish they would have kept it open until 9am like other hotels!

I apologize for the confusion during your stay. We are fortunate enough to own multiple hotels in Topeka so when we have employees in crisis, we are able to use staff from others hotels. Unfortunately, this particular employee had not worked many shifts at the Senate and was not as familiar with the room locations as we had hoped. I also apologize that breakfast was not open until 9am for you. Are breakfast hours run until 9am everyday but we apparently closed early that day. I will make sure that this does not happen again.
