“Home away from Home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2009

My husband and I have stayed at the Colonnade numerous times over the past several years and All of our visits have been just delightful. The new rooms are gorgeous, with the most comfortable mattresses(in fact we tried to get one for our home), soft linens and warm duvets. Beautiful baths with great powerful showers. We are both neat and clean freaks and the Colonnade definitely lives up to our high standards in both areas. We have found the entire staff; from the doormen -to the waitstaff- to the front desk personnel- to the general manager- just incredibly kind and accomodating and professional. They all remember our names and we theirs as they make that kind of impression. They always make us feel that it is our home away from home.
The location is super as you can walk to Fenway, the South End, the Prudential, Newbury St., Copley Plaza, the park, the theaters and all the great restaurants in Boston. Being in the restaurant business ourselves, we can be quite particular about where we eat. One of the greatest places in Boston is right at the Colonnade, Brasserie Jo...they have the best steak au poivre anywhere!!!!!
We live on the Cape, but like to sneak away once a summer to enjoy their fabulous roof-top pool. I believe it is the only one in the city.
It is just an all-round great hotel; clean and modern chic; friendliest of staff and fabulous location and food....wish they had a place like that everywhere we travel!!!!!!!!!!

Took the family to Boston for a 5 day get away reserving 2 rooms. 2 poor customer service issues that I think reflect poorly on the service for the hotel.

1. Checked in at 5pm. Only 1 room was ready and was told the other room would be ready by 5:30. Decided to go to dinner and get into the second room later. Came back at 7:30 and was told the 2nd room was stillnot ready but would be by 8pm. 8pm came and went and no room. Was told 8:30. Guess what, at 9pm the room was still not ready. When asking the front desk for help and information why the delay, they made me feel like I was intruding. I'm a reasonable person, but to not be able to check in until after 10pm is ridiculous, but even worse is the snooty attitude of the front desk.

2. On the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of my stay, every morning at 7 am, heavy equipment (almost like a concrete jack hammer) began drilling above my room. When I inquired into the cause, I was told tough luck, we have to complete our work. Now again, I am a reasonable person, but I am on vacation, paying over $200 dollars a night and too be woken up at 7am on vacation is unexcusable. Start your work after 9, alert your guests, or send them to another room that won't be disturbed.

I left the Colonnade very disappointed with the service and more importantly the attitude. I spent a lot of money for this location and the hotel could not have been more rude to me as a guest.

Got a package deal so I wanted to try out the new Colonnade Hotel in the Back Bay. Loved the spacious rooms with luxurious beds and flat-screen TVs. The rooftop pool bar was nice, but nothing really special. I wasn't very impressed. Here's a list of pros and cons for me.

PROS:
- Location is prime (across the street from the Prudential center and walking distance to Newbury Street, Boston Public Garden, Boston Commons) and close to T stops
- Spacious rooms
- Comfortable beds (too many pillows for my taste though)
- Flat-screen TVs
- Mini bar refrigerator in room
- Robes provided
- The bellhop - wonderful gentleman who has been working at the hotel for years and was a real pleasure
- If you valet your car, you can leave it parked until 2 PM (I guess other people were told 3 PM)
- Roof-top pool and bar
- Brasserie Jo is adjoined for food and drinks

CONS:
- Less than friendly staff on check-in
- Walls are paper-thin (I could hear it when the person in the neighboring room was using the bathroom)
- Our toilet ran intermittently all night (to the hotel's credit, we did not inform them about it during our stay)
- If you want to valet park your car, don't pull up in front of the hotel, it's actually ahead to the right up in a lot
- Parking is expensive
- Valet does not operate 24 hours a day
- When we asked for a mini-bar key, the staff told us it would be awhile because they had to "look for one" and they weren't sure they had any left (strange for an upscale hotel)
- Unable to accomodate our request for late check-out

In conclusion, the location and rooms are wonderful. Would stay here again especially if I was able to get a deal again.

We had booked 14 days in this hotel, but from the moment we had asked for foam pillows, we were treated badly in this hotel by the front desk staff, two of them being exceptionally surly, arrogant and rude throughout the stay. Two days later, the laundry that we had given for cleaning came back discolored and when we filed a complaint about that, it developed into a real nightmare. It was apparent that we, as foreigners, were considered as outcasts, not worthy of being spoken to correctly. It was a very frustrating experience since we could not do anything to chance this, there were no answers and promises that we would receive a call about it were not kept. Two days before we would have checked out, while asking at the front desk about the laundry again the front office manager all of a sudden became so angry about us as "troublemakers" that he threw us out of the hotel!! We had to pack within ten minutes and at 10pm we found ourselves on the streets of Boston.

ColonnadeBoston, Management at Colonnade Hotel, responded to this review, September 16, 2009
We are grateful for and have hosted many foreign travelers at the hotel since our inception. Once again, we apologize for the tardiness in delivering the foam pillows. After reviewing our logs, we are of the opinion that we could definitely have delivered them in a more efficient manner. Please accept our apologies for the laundry discoloration and we’re truly sorry for this inconvenience. In fact, we have reimbursed the traveler for twice the estimated retail value of the two items of clothing as a gesture of our sincerity and returned the items, re-laundered. In addition, we have adjusted off two nights of the stay.

The Colonnade Hotel takes the physical safety of our employees and guests very seriously. When unique and unfortunate circumstances occur, we regrettably have to ask that a guest remove themselves from the desk area immediately.

We wish the circumstances allowed for a different outcome.

Right from the start, Jimmy the Bellman, greeted me with his welcoming smile and "pleasantries". Then Matt from Guest Services followed up on my entire stay, to ensure all my personal needs were being met-- not to mention his entire Polite and Competent Housekeeping Staff.

Whenever we want to visit Boston's great sights and sample different tastes, we can easily get to them & then back to the Colonnade to unwind at their own terrific restaurant -- Brasserie Jo's and swim in their unique rooftop pool.

For my guests and myself , no visit to Boston is complete without staying at the Colonnade. You'll hear the travel ads say, 'You have got to try the Boston Experience'.

What they really mean is, "You must try the "BOSTON - COLONNADE EXPERIENCE!"

Can only add that the place was geared up for everything we needed.Bed and bedding were really comfy .Room was spacious and as our first stop on our month long tour in USA, it set the standard and was not beaten. Loved the experience of breakfast at Charlie`s Sandwich shop .
Norman the Doorman was a brilliant help to us and if his management are reading this -he really deserves praise as he went well beyond the service normally given . Anyone who moans about this place needs to get a life .Loved Boston as did our kids and can not recommend this hotel more highly .

What a lovely place. The location was great, the staff were helpful and the room was clean and modern. Some may find the room, and particulary the bathroon, a little small by USA standards; we found it adequate for us (2 adults and one teenage daughter). The roof pool was great and the fact that we were allowed to us, for a few hours after we checked out - and that our valet parking was also valid up to 3pm on checkout day - was fantastic.

It was a bit pricier than the hotel we stayed in the weekend before but I think worth it.

A bit of advice - join the 'I Prefer' scheme before booking to get free internet access
