“Great! Exactly what I expected”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2011

We stayed for three nights in July, after reserving a room back in February. Check-in was no problem, the clerk said she'd noticed we'd requested a high room on our reservation and so she'd "just" moved us from the second floor to the fifth floor (no other rooms available). We were in 505, a typical suite type room with separate king bedroom. We used the sofa bed and a rollaway for the two teens. Comfortable king bed. While it was a bit tight with the rollaway, just the option to be able to get a rollaway was great. Having the extra space for the kids with their own tv, and the refrig and microwave was great, and a real value, I think, compared to other hotels I researched. Our view looked south towards the office buildings and a bar. Not a great view, but okay. Nice tall windows! As other reviewers have said, the observation deck is spectacular. You can bring a drink up there and pretend it's the view from your room :) Also, as it's been said, it was noticably louder outside on Fri and Sat night compared to Thurs. We'd brought a travel sound machine to drown out the noise which helped us at least in the bedroom. The room seemed clean, but I did notice my white socks were noticably dirty after only an hour or so in there during the evening. We didn't spend much time in the room, typically leaving before 10 and getting back at 3 or 4 to regroup, before going out again. That's why when housekeeping tapped on our door to clean it five minutes after we'd just gotten back late one afternoon, it was a bit annoying and required some negotiation to have time to get ready and still allow the maid in there to get the room cleaned before she went home. We did not use the breakfast or the bar area in the eve. We'd brought along some breakfast items and bought some milk and other items at the 7 11 nearby. All in all, Boston was great and the hotel was perfect for us and (best of all) exactly what I'd expected, given the reviews I'd read on tripadvisor!

We just got back from the Custom House on a timeshare exchange. The place is just very special; the architecture, history and location make it near perfect. Short walk to the Harbor and Long Wharf, Quincy Market, North End, Boston Commons...wherever. The view from the observation deck is awesome. It's a small timeshare place, so no real restaurant or other amenities (continental breakfast in the mornings and a bar in the evening), but I'd stay here again in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: The higher the floor the better the view. MUST be at least 6th floor

We've stayed at the Custom House at least twice a year for years now and always very much look forward to returning.

The entire staff is genuinely outstanding in their service--caring, prompt, friendly, knowledgeable.

The rooms ("villas") are large and quite comfortable. There is a living room (couch, comfortable arm chair and coffee table) along with a small kitchen area (small sink, glasses, dishes, microwave oven, small refrigerator, but no stove) and a dining room table that comfortably sits four. That room has ample storage space and a large screen TV. The couch converts into a bed for two.

There's a master bedroom with a king-sized bed, excellent storage and another large screen TV.

There is one bathroom, but each villa has doors so that there's privacy in reaching the bathroom for those in the master bedroom and for anyone sleeping in the living room/dining room.

The location is outstanding. The Custom House is easy to reach. It's only a few steps away from the Fanueil Hall/Quincy Marketplace and a half block away from the Greenway. It's a few steps away from the entrance to the MBTA Aquarium stop on the Blue Line and within easy walking distance of the North End (just across the Greenway) and much of downtown Boston.

The Custom House offers free coffee throughout the day and has an exceptional entertainment program on many nights in its historic Counting Room. It also offers tours of the historic and iconic building and has some of the best views in the city from its observation deck (and from many of its rooms).

As one would expect from a city location, there is valet parking and it's not free. The kitchen area is smallish and limited, but there are many excellent restaurants (as well as any number of fast food places) within a few steps. Continental breakfast items are available in the Counting Room during the morning.

There is no pool, but it is possible to swim at the nearby Marriott Long Wharf (just across the Greenway).

This is a beautiful historic landmark turned into vacation villas. We have 2 kids and the sofa bed is a very nice one that seems large and like it would easily accomodate 2 but we got a roll away as well to ensue they slept well. We travel extensively and would have to say that these rooms are smaller than we are used to although not terrible. They could also do with a second half bath but it is too late for that now. I guess they chose to put more units in rather than have a second half bath. Too bad because it would make the units much more enjoyable. I was wary of booking a unit from an owner, didn't want any problems, so we booked directly through the hotel and paid top dollar. Even so they attempted to put us on the 2nd floor upon check in. They begrudingly moved us to the 4th floor but upon entering we could not bear the room. No windows in bedrooms and looked out onto the air vents of another building - very depessing. So, after making a minor fuss they moved us to a much nicer room on the 7th floor. Now why don't they do that to begin with? Why make us beg? The concierge is nice. They gave us plenty of towels and room supplies (not the high quality we are used to but just fine). Again, we are used to 5 star hotels so it's hard to compare but this was good for us this year as we were trying to be more economical in our travels. Highly recommend walking to the North End (about 10 minutes) to find a good restaurant versus Fanueil Hall (across the street)which is mosty a tourist trap and not unique food, you can find most of it in a mall anywhere. Exception is Regina's Pizzza which is good. Both Legal Seafoods and the Chart House are right down the street. You can walk down and take the water ferry to the Charleston Navy Yard to start the Freedom trail. Aquarium is right down the street.

Room Tip: Probably try to book through an owner vs. direct.

This was a great choice for our family of 4 (2 teens) for a week in Boston. Suites were comfortably roomy and really decorated lovely. Service was great from the front desk staff and all our special requests were met swiftly and politely. GREAT location, a block from the wharf, and Fanueil Hall marketplace. Only a few blocks from the North End. And the Custom House itself was a beauty of a building--we went up to the observation floor at least once a day.
We slept with the windows open enjoying the night breeze but there are a few pubs down below and loud people woke me up sometimes. This may be my only complaint but I would still go back there.
I think this must be a secret or something because people didn't know that big clock-tower was a hotel. It's different. I highly recommend the Custom House.

We stayed at the Custom House over Memorial Day weekend with our 2 nieces. First of all, it's a great location and a very beautiful hotel. You really can't beat it. It was great that no matter where we were, we could look into the skyline and say "There's our hotel". The architecture inside and out was amazing.

I booked our room via Expedia and asked for a room on an upper floor given what I had read from others regarding the noise from the local bars. The hotel accommodated my request (thank you!) I would HIGHLY recommend you do the same. There are 2 bars that are across the street from the hotel and they can get loud. We stayed in room 2301 (highest level of rooms) and we had no issues with noise. Our room was small, but it was nice to have a bedroom for myself and my husband while the girls had the living room as their own area. The bathroom was also small, but for a few days we made due. The view from our room was amazing!

There is an observation deck on the 25th floor -- very cool!!! Also, there is a game room on the 24th floor. Nice touch. We only played a few quick games of air hockey, but this was fun and not something we really expected.

There is a small fridge in the room...we filled it with water which was helpful as the bottled water offered by the hotel was $5/bottle (yikes!) Also, we brought granola bars for breakfast. There is a breakfast room with free coffee/tea/hot chocolate. The food is expensive ($2 for a yogurt, $2 for a small individual serving of cereal, etc.) It's nice they have this as an option, but we only chose to go there one morning.

My only complaints....the carpets in our room needed cleaning badly! Can't tell this just by looking at the carpet since it is dark blue. I know this because everyday my socks were BLACK! And this was before I left the hotel for the day. Also, one day housekeeping did not come until 4pm. By then we were back in our room to take a quick nap before dinner & the Blue Man group (which I would recommend....especially if you have kids!) Those are my only 2 complaints.

I would highly recommend the Custom House and I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Request a high room to avoid noise from the 2 bars
