“Good Hotel, Great Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2013

I booked this hotel before really reading many of the reviews. I was afraid afterwards because of its TripAdvisor ranking in the hotels of Boston. I can say that my fears were misplaced. I'd really rate this hotel as "Good" or 3.5 if it were an option, but..no. Therefore the 3 rating.

Check-in was easy and the staff was polite. The rooms could be considered on the small side but were clean - something very important to me. My bathroom was a generous size and its floor grout looked clean and unstained. The beds and pillows were comfortable and not worn out.

The hotel itself seemed old, but maintained. The lobby and front desk are beautiful. The elevators are great; they are fast, smooth, and decently lit. Upstairs, my hallway looked a little dated, but not in an unpleasing way. The wooden door frames on a few of the rooms were superficially deteriorated at the bottoms, but painted nicely.

There is a small breakfast place inside the hotel with a $15 hot buffet. There is complimentary coffee and tea in the morning at the entrance. Also, just north of the hotel on Tremont and Stuart is a Panera Bread and a half block west of that is a Starbucks and 7-11. There is a Dunkin' Donuts another block north at Boylston.

Wifi was included in the room price and presented good signal strength in my room and in the lobby area.

There is a parking garage across the street from the hotel entrance. I didn't have a rental car, but if you do you may want to consider asking about the parking situation and the price.

The location is great and close to so many things. A TripAdvisor review regarding possible safety issues at night is unfounded in my experience.

If you like new and fancy, this probably isn't the hotel for you. If you don't mind a clean, older hotel with smaller rooms, then I recommend the Courtyard Downtown for your visit. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Street side can be noisy. Rooms ending in "42" are long skinny rooms with a unique layout...

Stayed one night last week prior to a New England cruise, using points for our stay. The hotel is definitely worn, tired, and in need of an overhaul. Service was ok. I've stayed in multiple Courtyards in other major cities, this one is by far the worst I've seen. The big problem was the room: the room was so small that we could hardly get our luggage (2 regular sized bags and 2 backpacks) in the room. And there was no place to sit a suitcase to open it. The desk and chair were virtually right next to the bed, and there was no other place to sit - just the desk chair. The bathroom had been re-done, but, there was no place to sit anything - just one very small shelf over the toilet that held the towels. My husband did not have hot water for his shower. The toilet clogged after one flush. Maintenance did respond quickly to prevent an overflow. The breakfast was OK - typical Courtyard stuff. Yes, it is walkable to many sites and good restaurants, but we won't stay there again.

We booked this hotel because it was located in the theater district where we were attending a show - The entire staff was professional and helpful. The lobby and outside of the property was very clean and well maintained. We had a King room on the 9th floor that was clean and comfortable. We loved the convenience of this hotel and would stay there again. Absolutely no complaints !

We did not have the problems that the other reviews stated. We were on the 15th floor facing the front of the hotel and medical center. Room was usual size for a King at a Courtyard. Bath was on the larger size. The location was perfect. Just a few blocks to the T green line. Easy to get to Fenway from here and JFK Museum. Recommend Rock Bottom Brewery (1/2 block) and Peach Tree Restaurant in China Town. (just a few blocks away) Parking is expensive but all of the hotels in Boston charge around the same price. The staff was very helpful with restaurant advice and driving directions. I would stay here again. Don't drive in Boston. Very difficult.

Room Tip: If you are a Marriott Rewards Gold or Plat. ask for Executive level (15th floor) No street noise at...

Thanks for your positive comments on our central location, comfortable room and cleanliness. I will be sure to share your positive comments about our helpful staff with them!

Driving in Boston is challenging. I always guide visitors to tuck your car in a garage and walk or take the “T”.

The Courtyard downtown is in walkable distance of Chinatown, Boston Common, and the theatre district, as well as two very close T stations that will get you anywhere in the city. That is the best part of this hotel. The lobby is beautiful, classically styled and grand. We stayed in a standard king room and it was fine. There was nothing special about this hotel. The window was small, the bed was comfortable and the room was very average looking. The staff were great and very helpful. The only real downside of this room was that it had a distinctly musty smell. I have no other complaints, but nothing about this place excited me. Basically, you get what you expect from a 3 star hotel.

Dear dhunse,
Thank you for complimenting our helpful staff. We appreciate that. With regards to a musty room odor, we are a 100% non-smoking building and have strict cleanliness procedures in place. The current guest room renovation includes all new bathrooms and carpeting and will greatly improve the look and feel of the hotel.
We look forward to the opportunity to welcome you back to the Courtyard Boston Downtown in the future.

Stayed here this past weekend. I was able to book through Priceline and got a great rate. I was a little nervous after reading the reviews but I am happy to say I had no complaints. Yes, the rooms (and especially the bathrooms) are on the small side but it's very clean, nicely decorated and the staff are polite and very easy to deal with. I like the location and we walked to both Newbury Street and Quincy Market. I don't think the room would be worth $300 a night but if you can get a deal it is well worth it. As usual parking is expensive at $43 a night but if you don't mind a short walk you could park at Boston Common.

Liked this hotel very much. It has a lovely old fashioned hotel. We had a spacious room, comfortable beds and pillows. The staff were friendly and were able to answer any questions we had promptly and with a smile on their faces. Did not eat in the hotel. The hotel is about five minutes walk from Boston Common and the start of the Freedom Trail. It is also in the heart of the theatre district. I would stay again.

Dear Doug C,
We are happy to hear that your family liked the Courtyard Boston Downtown very much. This is a lovely classic hotel originally built in 1925 for Boston Post No. 10 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks as a Lodge and Club. Many of the iconic details remain including the elk head carvings in the frieze molding in the lobby.
Thanks for writing about our friendly, smiling staff; we take pride in exactly that! We look forward to hosting you again when you return to Boston.
