Returning to this property for the first time after the change in ownership from Ritz-Carlton to Taj, we were not only pleasantly surprised, but the property is better than ever. Due to late booking, we could not get our preferred location facing Commonwealth Avenue in the "new" section. These rooms, and especially the bathrooms, are larger than the rooms in the "old" wing facing Newbury Street. While the view over the Public Garden is beautiful, I've never thought it was worth $100 a night extra. Room sizes are similar to above "new" and "old" wings detailed above even facing the Public Garden.
This being said, our room overlooking Newbury Street in the "old" wing was flawless with not one chip of paint. Best mattress in a hotel in years, bathroom is small for two people with make up, razors etc., but certainly passable. What is incredible is the instant hot water, great shower pressure, soap, shampoo etc. Nightly turndown and towel change flawless as was the maid service. Bathrobes sized at L/XL were way too large for my 5'1' spouse and no other sizes were available. Hopefully, they will correct this.
Great staff! Snafu with sending over the wrong car was settled by taking the $42 a night parking charge off the bill. From the Cafe, front desk and one of the world's best bars, all I can stay is outstanding! This has been and will remain our "Boston" home. The newer Ritz on the other side of the Common, for out tastes, is just that; common. Now in its 80th year, the Grand Dame of Boston is better than ever!
