“Great accommodations, convenient location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

The accommodations were great. The resident owner was friendly and knowledgeable about the area. She provided helpful hints for our visit and activities. The breakfasts were delicious. The location is within walking distance of most downtown attractions. I would highly recommend Beacon Hill B&B.

This bed and breakfast is in the heart of the city and within easy walking distance of Fenway Park, TD Center, Boston Common, great shopping and dining. Your hostess is extremely pleasant, helpful and caring. Breakfast served at the dining table overlooking the river and park area is stunning; the bedrooms are large and very comfortable.
It is pricey but then there's no need to spend money on cabs or transportation.

Room Tip: Both rooms are amazing with their own ensuite - very comfortable.

We are just back from a three-night stay with family and friends in both rooms of this wonderful house, with its high ceilings and beautiful antiques, where we were warmly and graciously welcomed by Susan Butterworth who is helpful without being intrusive. The lovely rooms are truly enormous – plenty of space to spread out and relax. And, when visiting Boston, what could be better than historic – and elegant -- Beacon Hill -- within easy walking distance of all the sites and very close to a T stop. We would definitely stay here again!

Just come back from a three night stay in this lovely house, rooms were very large, just two rooms are rented out and we were travelling with my daughter and her partner so was just right. It is situated in the lovely Beacon Hill District. 3 minutes walk to Boston Common, 10 minutes walk to Copley Plaza and Macy's. It is not a cheap place to stay but nowhere is in Boston. There was no tea or coffee making facilities in the room which was a bit disappointing. Breakfast was either a choice of 2 cereals, orange juice, tea or coffee, you could have toast with either scrambled egg or fried egg or eggy bread. Saturday you can have apple waffle but only one. There was not sufficient breakfast to reflect the price - we stay in B & B's regularly and this was the smallest amount of food offered.

Room Tip: There are only two rooms the front room has bath and shower, the other room has just shower.

My friend and I stayed here recently and had a very comfortable night. The rooms have great character, well maintained and clean. The staff are really friendly and helpful. And a nice breakfast in the morning - quite sufficient for us. The position is right by the T that runs into the city in 5 mins so you can't fault the convenience of the position either. We would certainly be happy to stay there again.

Some of the earlier reviews about Beacon Hill Bed and Breakfast are much too negative in my opinion. Two of us stayed with Madame Butterworth for 2 weeks last May ( 2012 ), and
had absolutely wonderful time.
There seem to be confusion in the USA about what is an INN and what is a " bed and
breakfast". This is partly also, because many inns ( for instance at the Cape Cod ) also
call them bed and breakfast, although they usually have much more to offer than just a bed
and the breakfast in the morning. I think, it would be wise for travelers to expect just
what the place offers, otherwise they will be deeply disappointed.
We visited many places and private homes during those 2 weeks in May, and IT
WAS COLD everywhere. Many people currently have to save energy, and heating a huge
Victorian home with poor insulation and drafty windows means throwing thousands of dollars
out of window.
You can enjoy the Victorian charm, what we did, but had to ask for extra blankets to
stay warm in the night, which we were given, there was a supply.
The breakfasts by Madame B. were very French, with crepes and other wonderful
Parisian specialties, Mrs. B's childhood in Paris is still reflected in her repertoire,
which comes as a welcome change after the sometimes very heavy muffins and
pancake culture. We never left the breakfast table hungry and every morning something
different was offered.
We would stay at the Beacon Hill BAB anytime again. And saw during those 2 weeks
many other tourists, who had stayed before, and would return.
But, and this is a tip from 2 of us : do not expect an inn, just a charming bedroom
with breakfast in somebody's home, who needs to earn lots of money every year
just to pay the property tax on the noble Beacon Hill. Chapeau for Mrs. Butterworth,
who said it herself: she is the only one on the hill to provide this kind of service.
What would be, if she would stop, and we would have to do without this wonderful
experience ?
P.S. The new shower is great !

Room Tip: Brimmerstreet side. From the opposite side you have a nice view of the river, but also noise from...

Susan Butterwork’s Beacon Hill B&B. 14’ ceilings, antiques, unbelievable location near Charles Street and Boston Common. Perfect balance of help & privacy. Truly a home, elegant and warm. Lots of light, quiet. Huge room, like a studio apartment almost. The bells from the church across the street toll. Charming!
