“very nice hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

We stayed here 1 night on as a stopover on our way to Ireland. We used 12k spg points and the room was nice. Separate bath and tub and a decent view of the city and clock tower. The common spaces were amazing. The lobby and bar areas are nicely done. I would like to stay here again and enjoyed our stay.

They need to improve the front entrance area. It just seemed to be overcrowded and not very relaxed. I asked one of the doormen for directions to Fenway and he tried to convince me to take cab when I said I want to walk then he simply said I don't know I will have to ask so,some else. We just mapped it on our phones and it was fine.

There is a very happening bar/club there FYI which we didn't check out and couldn't hear any noise in the room aside from an ocassional ambulance siren.

All in all a great stay and I liked how they welcome you with a glass of champagne!

Thank you for sharing this review with us, we agree that our public spaces are amazing (we think they are the best of any hotel in Boston!). Thanks for sharing your thoughts, much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Would have been perfect sans the cigarette stench in room - it permeated everything! Got a great suite upgrade with fab view - but the entire room just stank (despite claiming to be smoke free) - otherwise great hotel but 1 1/2 wait for check in!

We’re pleased to hear that you enjoyed your upgraded room and view but I sincerely apologize for the odor in the room and your delayed check-in! Please note that we are extremely sensitive to Boston’s non-smoking regulation and this should have been caught prior to you checking in.

Kind regards,
Brian

When we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by friendly staff who offered us a complimentary glass of champagne after we checked in. The lobby is on the 2nd floor which is also where the bar is and lots of great lounge chairs. As our room wasn't quite ready when we arrived, we were more than happy to relax a few minutes with our champagne. The only downside at this point was that the person who checked us in went on break and forgot to tell anyone to let us know when our room was ready, so we waited over an hour before we finally went up and asked!
The room itself was great as was the bed, (although the pillows were merely foam wedges). The bathroom had both a generous walk-in shower as well as a soaking tub. (It also had a great make-up mirror in addition to the regular mirror-always a nice feature) The design of the hotel overall was great, incorporating much of the old jail into the layout. The location of the hotel was fantastic, in walking distance to lots of great eateries and shopping in the North End. Also, there is a T stop right there as the hotel adjoins to MA General Hospital.
We did not eat at any of the restaurants at the hotel, but they looked great and also had nice menus. Complimentary coffee was also available self-serve every morning in the lobby. The bar had a wonderful outdoor patio with plenty of lounge seating.
Sidenote 1: Hotel easily accessed by silver line bus and T red line from airport.
Sidenote 2: Parking on the premises is very pricey

Room Tip: We stayed in a king room within the new portion of the hotel (vs the renovated jail portion) and our...

We spent several days here on a mini break in Boston. It is a really lovely boutique hotel; as others have mentioned, it is based in the converted building of the old Boston jail.

There are two parts to the hotel. The first is the old jail building, which has been converted to a really beautiful space. The main entrance and reception area are in there, as is the restaurant and bar. There are a limited number of guest bedrooms in the "jailhouse" side; the rest are in the new part of the hotel which can be accessed from the lobby.

We stayed in the old side of the building and our room (we booked a corner view) was beautiful. A huge kingside bed, plenty of space, huge bathroom with a big shower and separate large bath tube and plenty of Molton Brown toiletries. The room felt newly refurbished and was spotless. The corner view wasn't anything special (we looked out on the tube station and the hotel forecourt - we weren't high enough to see the river) but the floor to ceiling windows were still great.

There was only one downside to staying in the old building: the noise. The Liberty is a very lively destination for locals and tourists alike. We arrived on a Thursday night at about 11pm after a long flight. The reception area basically doubles up as a bar and it was heaving with drinkers. Reception was busy but after a short wait the staff were quick to check us in and offer a complimentary welcome glass of bubbly.

The noise from the reception area bar does carry, because it is built like an atrium, but the main issue in our room was the noise from the outdoor bar area - which we were pretty much directly above. We went to bed assuming the drinkers would be made to move indoors come midnight but in fact it is open until 2am every night (and was busy every night we were there, including Sunday). I managed to get to sleep okay after turning on the hum of the air con to help drown it out but my partner had to wear ear plugs every night. We did consider asking to change rooms but the room itself was lovely and after the first night we decided against the hassle. So if you are a light sleeper, make sure you are roomed well away from the front of the hotel.

This is the only real negative comment we had about the place, and the reason we gave it 4 stars rather than 5. The reception staff were all really great and helpful. We didn't have breakfast in the hotel, preferring to eat out (there are plenty of places for brunch or breakfast on Charles Street). A nice touch was a free coffee station in the lobby, so even if you weren't having breakfast in the hotel you could still grab a coffee to go. We also ordered room service for dinner one night and it was both quick and fairly reasonably priced for a room service menu.

The hotel is also well located. It is right next to the Charles MGH tube stop and the tube is very easy to use - the ticket machines are self explanatory. You can walk across the Longfellow Bridge towards Cambridge and the hotel is also only a short walk from Boston Common.

All in all we would definitely recommend the hotel, but just be warned regarding the noise in the old side of the building.

Stayed there one nightbefore attending a function at Community Boating (Challenge on the Charles). It was lovely, room very large, bathroom to die for, and the bed was so comfortable. We has a chance to try the restaurants on-site and they too were very good. I would recommend staying there to anyone visiting that side of the city.

Stayed here for one weekend night in september . The entrance is just beautiful. From the catwalks soaring 5 stories up to the large glass windows and chandelier s, it is drama, beauty, and a air of old world meets new.

The check in was easy and smooth and they gave us champagne which was a nice touch. Our room was very nice. It had two double beds and an overall serene feeling. The bathroom was beautiful. But here is where we ran into problems. The glass shower didn't have a door block so water was all over the floor and the bathtub only trickled cool water so my bath was scalding. I do hope they fix it.

The catwalk bar was a nice relaxing place to hang out while the lower level lobby bar filled with single Bostonians on Saturday night. I drank the "hydrate" with watermelon puree and vodka and it was very refreshing.

My only qualm is that a night will cost you close to 400 dollars and you don't get much. No breakfast. No coffee in the room. Not even parking.

Overall a great place. And would return in the future. Location was great and it was overall a beautiful hotel.

We liked the friendly nature of the front desk staff and the glass of bubbly was a nice touch. The location of the hotel is great and we were able to walk across the street to the T station and head to the Museum of Science and the Museum of Fine Art with ease!
The proximity of the MGH also allowed us to enjoy breakfast at the main cafeteria which has a breakfast pizza that hit the spot.
We'd return to the LIBERTY Hotel if we could get the Hotwire rate of $199/night. Our Superior King Bed room was very comfortable on the 11'the floor which was well away from the noisy but fun lobby.

Room Tip: Get a room away from the noisy lobby
