“Excellent SPG property”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

Of the three I've stayed at in Boston (W and Westin are the two others) the Liberty is definitely the best. Probably amassed two months worth of staying time over a five month project in Boston. Its history as a jail, and the gorgeous lobby are striking, but the good stuff isn't just skin deep. The rooms are well appointed, although the regular rooms are a bit on the small side. Suites are very nice 1 bedroom rooms though, with a real dining table, which is always nice. Good toiletries in room, and room service is generally good. The presence of 2 good restaurants (Scampo is better than Clink, but both are pretty good) and a good bar downstairs in Alibi is a real plus as well, especially for people staying here for work and mostly ordering in. Only real complaint is the gym is a bit on the small side for such a nice hotel. More machines and space would be nice there. They hold lots of cool events, although I never got to take part in any of them since I was in Boston for work. Definitely recommended. Recognition of SPG status is less good than at the other two properties, but its other virtues more than make up for it.

Room Tip: Recommend higher floor rooms if you don't like noise and are staying over a weekend.

WhenI lived in Boston, this was a jail. When I heard it had been turned into a hotel, I knew we'd find a reason to stay here. My only regret is staying just one night. While the weather isn't ideal, the rates right after Christmas are super low, we got a very good deal. We had a spacious room, with a partial view of the Charles river. The other part of the view was Mass Eye and Ear. Our room was spacious, big enough for us and a crib for the baby. its not a nasty pack n play either, but a real crib with a quality sheet.
The lobby is just stunning, with a soaring atrium and many areas to lounge and people watch. We didn't bring our pooch this time, but the hotel is dog friendly and it's so cool to have people hanging with their dogs. Champagne at check in is a welcome touch. The element of staying in boutique style at a former jail Really sets the Liberty apart. They offer enough history and little reminders; like a cell-like bathroom door and "solitary" key instead of Do Not Disturb sign, without making it feel creepy. So often hotels are totally generic and you feel guilty spending too much time there. But here there are so many different areas of the hotel to explore, each with its own character and history as part of the hotel.
Overall the staff was incredibly professional and accommodating. we found the valets to be somewhat aggressive in offering their service on arrival and departure. Parking is at a premium in Boston and the $38 price is in line with other places. That fact doesn't make it less painful, and valets hustling for tips adds insult to the injury. Just factor the price into the overall rate and enjoy the place. It's definitely worth it.

Room Tip: Ask for a river view. Next time I might try a room in the original jail rather than the tower.

Stayed here with kids. Location is great, but not as great as the Beacon Hill Hotel. Was not offered champagne as most are. Front desk did offer us another room in tower when I mentioned I was concerned about noise---but when I called them from the room to ask for a spoon to feed my infant, one never arrived. Carpets were very stained, phone very confusing, and on the morning of the day we were to checkout, my daughter's movie rental shut off at 8:00 am because "this room is checked out." The television just stopped working. There is only alcohol in room, not standard tea or coffee. In fact, there are a lot of things about the place that strive to be chic by aren't---the hotel frankly falls short of luxury. The details are just not there. The strangest thing happened with a coat we checked. Apparently it was locked up overnight and not available the next morning at coat check. We were leaving Boston and had to accept that they will mail us the coat---the person who would have retrieved it for us was "away".

Will say all people who helped with luggage and housekeeping staff were quite pleasant. Was not awakened by noise.

I will not stay here again---for $300, there are far better Boston options.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience and for your bringing your children in for an overnight stay at The Liberty. We endeavor to create special experiences for all of our guests, and I am very sorry that in your case we came up short in meeting your expectations with our service. Based on your feedback there were several “missed opportunities” to meet your needs. I understand, especially with kids, the importance of being able to relax in your room and watch TV or a movie. This is unfortunate but I would like to inform you that we are almost finished with a hotel-wide TV upgrade. I would be grateful to be able to speak with you off-line and ensure you were/are compensated for the issues. I can be reached directly at the hotel at 617-224-4000 or via email at brian.lodermeier@libertyhotel.com.

Kind regards,
Brian

Just spent 5 days in the Liberty Hotel as part of a work conference.
There are so many positives about this place, the location is excellent, the staff are wonderful, the food and bars are just fantastic. I really love this hotel and could certainly rave about it for hours.

My only comments are to question the location of your room when checking in.
The hotel is near a hospital, so ambulance noise can be an issue.
Also rooms in the Jail section can suffer from noise when staff are setting up dining for conferences.
If I have one other small quibble, while the gym is ok, it is not at the same outstanding level as the rest of the place. They could do with some more running machines and weight benches.

Room Tip: The hotel is near a hospital, so ambulance noise can be an issue. Also rooms in the Jail section ca...

Stayed here for three nights. Enjoyed my stay & would definately recommend

Like other reviewers described, the hotel is an old jail which has been gentrified & developed into a trendy, boutique hotel. Decor is fresh, modern & fits well incorporating some of the older elements to the building.

We arrived late & the check in lady was extremely helpful & very friendly which was nice late at night! We were also greeted with two glasses of champagne which was a nice touch!

Rooms modern, & very adequate. Good facilities also in building.

Appears the hotel is a very popular venue for weddings & events & can definately see why! Amazing Venue as the decor inside looks even better at night. Make sure you utilize the bar up stairs which is for guests only! Amazing view & great drinks. On Saturday, the lobby was transformed into a bustling nightclub full of young 20 somethings. Music pumping, bar full & place packed full of party goers! great atmosphere! Music can be loud, but not distracting. If you aren't into this sort of thing, the might not place for you! Must be popular with couples as there was a "love kit" in the mini bar section!

Staff were very friendly & helpful. Lady at concierge desk helped book reservations which was very helpful. Also very easy to get a cab to the airport & so close by too!

CVS pharmacy literally across the road, whole foods a short walk away & Charles street is literally there for some of the best places in eat in town. Train station next to hotel also which is fabulous! There is a hospital next to the hotel but noise not noticeable.

Only issue was my friend got stuck in the restroom of our room due t the sliding door getting stuck. However, the maintaince men quickly came to the rescue which was not a hassle at all. We were promptly changed rooms as our door was hard to close. Wasn't qn issue at all, the hotel gave us a new room within 10mins

Overall, no complaints at all. Great location, high quality hotel with high quality service

Definately would stay again

Went to stay with friends who took us to Liberty for dinner. It was a gorgeous building, i believe it was a prison ( could see Jailhouse Rock ) there were all types of ppl from old ones to young ones to babes in prams but all kinda mingled well. The rest was lovely but did get confused with which waiter was where!!!! Small portions but just what you want when you having 5 courses. Would love to return but if only for a special occasion. Lovely valet service!!!!

My husband and I stayed at the hotel in December for one night to celebrate our anniversary. The hotel is absolutely gorgeous, especially the lobby. The holiday decor was beautiful and unique. We enjoyed several cocktails in the lobby while we waited for our dinner reservation. The sangria was amazing! We happily sat there for a few hours, people watched and ran up quite a bar tab.
The room itself was okay - modern and clean. We were shocked by the size of the bathroom, but the slate tile floor was absolutely freezing and the water pressure in the shower was ridiculously high (as in, ouch!).
We enjoyed Saturday brunch at Clink!

Room Tip: Our room 324 looked directly into the hospital beside the hotel.
