I went to Soulfire for the first time last night. I had a mixed impression.
Service was very good. The restaurant was only about 1/3 full, so that may have helped.
We had the Southern Fried Wings appetizer. This was easily the best item of the evening. The wings were cooked perfectly and golden brown. They came out very hot. They did not sit around in the kitchen at all. The coating was light and crunchy, even a little flaky. I could imagine adding a little more seasoning (salt, etc.) to the coating but if you add any of the sauces they supply, this is not an issue. Bottom line: They were great!
The ribs were not nearly as good. The spare ribs were mostly tender and a little fatty (which I like but some might not.) The baby backs were tough and inedible for someone that knows what they should be. The pulled pork was tasty.
'AVERAGE GOOD' SIDES
The fries were average good fries, not Buzzy's great, but certainly edible. The mac and cheese was also average good - not outstanding, but good. My portion had a lot of crust, which was nice, but not as much melted cheese as I had hoped. The beans were also average good, small and a little chewy with a dark, somewhat molasses sweet sauce and bits of meat, I guess. Mashed potatoes - for me, below average. The cornbread was also average good.
I'd definitely go back for the chicken, but I'd send back the babies if they came out as tough as they did last night.
BTW - no unsweetened tea? disappointing.
