“Great view. Okay food.”
Skipped the observation ($15, I think) and just went to the restaurant. The food was okay at best but the view is great. We went on a Thursday night about an hour before sunset and sat at a small table behind the bar right at a window looking towards the harbor, over Boston Common. By the time we had our meal, drinks and split a dessert it was dark and watching it go from light to dusk to dark was outstanding.
We noticed it went from medium busy an hour before sunset to packed with a line a few minutes before sunset. So get there before sunset and sit down and enjoy...don't try to time it for sunset. The food was okay, not bad but a bit pricy for just okay. The drinks were good and reasonably priced with a large drink menu. My wife said her Creme brûlée was the best she's ever had.
Another tip: you can just sit at the bar but your view will be partially obscured by the bottles on the glass wall in front of you.
If you walk around you can get a good southerly view but I never could find a westerly view but still well worth the visit to see from prudential to the ocean.
