“Perfectly fine. Great location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

Right, here's the truth. If you want somewhere trendy, funky, luxurious, boutique, etc. then feel free to pay the $350 (and the rest) dollars for somewhere super cool in Boston. NORMALLY, this is what I want and I'll pay the cash. BUT, I knew that the room I wanted for this trip was JUST a room, a bed just a bed, a shower just a shower, and I was there because I wanted to be a stone's throw from Newbury Street for 2 nights. And I was.

The staff at the hotel are lovely. There's free wifi. There's no bar, cafe, restaurant or frills. But do you know what, it was cheap in comparison to the other options and was perfectly clean, perfectly fine and a brilliant, brilliant location. I measure city centre hotels by how close they are to an Eileen Fisher and this one was 4 minutes. Yup. Beat that you W's, Morgan's, Mr & Mrs Smiths.

Don't be put off by the bad reviews. But don't go with expectations that won't be met. But as you saunter to Newbury St for half the price of the other 'boutiques' in the area, remember where you can spend the dollars you've saved.

We requested a room with 2 double beds, and although the room was small, the beds were double and very comfortable. The pillows were abundant and in excellent condition, as was the bedding. The room was clean and had a fridge and coffee maker. We liked the fact that we could open the windows about 4 inches to get fresh air. There were screens on the windows.
The shower was good, lots of hot water, and lots of newer, fluffy, white towels. The room cost us exactly what we were quoted and was available for us when we arrived about 1030 am on a Wed. We have travelled a fair amount and have never been given our room this early. The location was excellent. We either walked everywhere or took the hop on, hop off trolley. Lots of good restaurants within a 5 minute walk. I would recommend Rebeccas Cafe for a quick, but good brreakfast, anything from a bagel to a full breakfast. Flemings was our favourite for dinner, excellent beef tenderloin, with options for a smaller appetite. Their blue cheese stuffed olives and blue cheese mashed potatoes were superb. The staff was amazing. The staff at Hotel 140 recommended both of these places to us and also suggested great shopping areas, helped us get a taxi to the airport and were most accomodating. I would definitely book here again if I return to Boston. The only reason we did not rate it excellent is because there was no dresser to put clothing in and where one would hang clothing, was used for the refrigerator and night table.
We just lived out of our suitcases and didnt worry about it. The bathroom also lacked room for toilettries.

We were all shocked at the size of the room for 4 women, but we made the best of it. The room was clean and we had everything we needed. The staff was pleasant and always willing to help us find our way in the city. Great location, close to good restaurants and bars. I would definitely stay here again. The only reason I'm rating the room poor is because of its size, but if you don't plan to spend much time in the room...who cares? Get out and see the city!

Room Tip: If you need a lot of room to spread out, choose another hotel.

Staff were very friendly - perhaps we should have complained about the room size to see if we could move, but we didn't have time.
We had 2 double beds .... it was practically impossible to get behind one bed to the other without knocking the TV off the wall...about 12 " of space. No storage space for toiletries in the bathroom and the coffee maker did not work. Our view was a brick wall with windows. We could hear all conversations in the hall and neighboring rooms.
Also,It might be nice to be prepared to share the elevator and lobby with long term residents who have mental health issues...while this hotel is not considered too expensive, neither is it cheap, and it seemed as if we were in a nice homeless shelter at times. It is nice to reach out to the community, but also nice to be forewarned.

Room Tip: Look at your room before bringing your luggage upstairs!

I visit Boston between 5-10 times a year and have never stayed in a hotel as bad as Hotel 140. Do not be fooled by their use of the word "boutique." I can deal with small rooms and actually prefer boutique hotels but just because you have small rooms does not make you a boutique hotel. If you are looking for a true boutique hotel in Back Bay, I'd recommend the Charlesmark. I paid over $200 for 1 night at Hotel 140 and was expecting much better. My room felt more like a college dorm room than a hotel room. The furniture was cheap and ugly and the carpet was ragged and stained. It didn't appear to have been vacuumed before my arrival. If you're just looking for a place to crash, I suppose it'll do. Just don't expect to have a romantic weekend here. Check out the pictures I took and decide for yourself.

Dear Tumbleweed,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We apologize for the small bleach spots on your carpet. We strive to exceed expectations of every one of our guests and are disappointed that we missed the mark during your stay.

We are excited to let you know that we have been continually renovating the rooms at Hotel 140 in a large project as we upgrade the luxuriant aspects of the guest rooms. Many of our rooms have brand new warm textures, upgraded furniture options, and interesting features. We treat each guest room uniquely and look forward to the entire property being completely renovated. Perhaps on your next trip to Boston you can request one of our upgraded guest rooms.

In the interim, many of our guests enjoy the fact that they can stay in a fantastic location at a great price; especially when compared to the prices at boutique hotels in the same area.

We hope you will return and give us an opportunity to show you the true service and style of Hotel 140!

Kindly,
Emily A.

This place was started as YWCA for many years ago. As years passed by it is transformed to normal, small room hotel lying somehow central in Boston. I want to repeat that the rooms are small for american standards and bed is too. We have ordererd aditional movable bed, for a fee. Anyway, in expensive town as Boston this is good and cheap place if you do not plan to use your time inside a hotellroom. It is quiet, clean and stuff are very friendly and kind. There is no brekfast here, we used to go to cafeterias around. There is few good bars and places to eat closely, depends what you want:). Subway in Boston is well organized nad cheap, and will get you everywhere, so do not be obsessed to live very centraly.

We got in pretty late and the woman at the front desk, Althea was so friendly and sweet. When we got into our room we realized it was the smallest tightest room we'd ever been in, in a city...we were exhausted. I called to see if the next day we could switch to a bigger room if they had availability. She immediately checked, and upgraded us to a queen sized room and came upstairs with the keys and helped us move down the hall. MUCH nicer room. Great value, and amazing location to Copley, Newbury St. Boston Commons. We walked EVERYWHERE from this location. The rooms were clean, had everything we needed and the service was impeccable. Great value for the price.

Room Tip: We were on the 8th floor. Didn't hear a lot of street noise, nor a lot of noise from other guest...
