“A throwback”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

This cozy, homey place seems like it's from another era. On the Saturday night when I dined here, there appeared to be a mix of "regulars", young couples on dates, etc. The portions are hearty and reasonably priced. Pasta is tender, and the chicken parm was out of this world - delicately breaded and delicious. Highly recommend!

“A hidden gem, better than many in the North End”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

This family owned and operated Italian restaurant in the Allston/Brighton area is small and a little noisy but well worth a visit or two. The authentic Italian food is delicious and priced very well. Some of the pasta is hand made, and you can really tell the difference.

Parking is a little difficult, but there is a public lot about a block away near the liquor store.

The house made tiramisu is worth the trip alone.

Good spot for a first date.

Highly recommend this restaurant!!!

“As good as Arthur Ave”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

Having dined on Arthur Ave in the Bronx dozens of times I think I am qualified to know good Italian food.
The restaurant at Carlo's is not "cuisine" but it is excellent homemade Italian food. The selection is exceptional in that it offers food the average diner does often see. Being my second time at Carlo's in the last month I made sure two of the three dishes I ordered were untried. Bottom-line is that everything you eat at Carlo's will come out hot; the plate will be filled and the food will taste great.
What could be better? Allston really stinks for parking and with all the restaurants in the area they really hurt themselves by not having more available places to park. Try the public lot behind Blanchards Liquor or street parking. Do not risk a store parking lot( you will be towed) or a local street that wants an Allston parking sticker( u will get ticketed). I would also say that the bread the use is just fair. It is not the Bronx.
Lastly the place is small and popular, so timing your visit is always chancey. It can get a little loud , so quiet and romantic is not to be expected.

“Wonderful experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2012

I've been here several times, most recently for my mother's birthday. The waitress was a sweetheart, treated my mom like a queen, brought her homemade tiramisu with a birthday candle in it (after dinner). I've never had to wait to be seated here, though I'd say the earlier you go, the better. This is a tiny place with a very warm feel&the food is excellent. When I don't want to make the trip to the North End, I can get North End quality food here. I had the homemade tortellini in pesto sauce which is very filling so I took the leftovers home. I've never had a bad meal or a bad experience here. When I want to take someone out for dinner&ask them where they want to go, Carlo's is usually the answer. Top notch!

“A hidden gem-genuine Italian”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

I've been here several times. Tonight is the most recent. Service is personal. Food is spectacular. The place is small --so call ahead-- and the only parking is on a busy street. But it's worth it. Go for lunch or dinner. This place is a real favorite.
