“Superlative food, but over-attentive service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2013

My wife and I went to the ‘high-end’ L’Espalier for lunch during a quiet mid-week service. The waiting staff were way-over attentive (probably because of the high staff-to-diners ratio), but the food was absolutely superlative, and one of the culinary highlights of our holiday! One complaint -they obviously don't monitor their e-mails personally, as I've only been sent an automated reply to a query.

“Underwhelmed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

Did the chefs multi course. Best described as all dressed up without showering beforehand. No real standouts. Amazing plating, service and ambiance, but nothing delicious. Food needs some salt or butter or whatever chefs do to bring out some flavor. Dessert was slop on a plate, some kind of raw oatmeal, nut thing-a-ma-jig. If this is their best, try ANY of the rest.

“Perfection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2013

The food was original, but not pretentious. The foie gras was the best I've had in my life, and it paired wonderfully with both the strawberries and the beets. The halibut I ordered as an entrée was perfectly cooked and the spinach-oyster emulsion was wonderful.

Delicious food in an elegant setting. Wonderful service by knowledgeable staff. Good wine list and great cheese selections. One of the best restaurants in Boston.

“Not a hint of pretense”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

So many fine restaurants seem to believe that stuffiness and intimidation somehow enhance their offerings. Not so here. From the valet to the sommelier, each of the 7 or 8 people who interacted with us appeared genuinely interested in our enjoyment of the time we spent with them. The food was superb and the wine list was impressive - you would expect that - but dining is in its totality an experience, not a meal or a drink. The staff here gets that, and executes flawlessly.
