We had dinner after a Saturday matinee at nearby Speakeasy Theater. We had not made an advanced reservation. When we stopped in at 3:30 PM and asked about a 5:45 PM seating, we were told that we could be accommodated but would have to vacate the table at 7 PM. One of our party of 3 wanted to try this place, so we signed up; with misgivings about that situation in a high end restaurant.
We showed up at the appointed time and were shown to a table in a small room to the right of the entrance. Turned out to be a good idea, as the main (much larger) space got very noisy as it filled up starting after 6 PM.
We all had a martini, a simple salad, main course, and coffee. The drinks were ordinary, a bit skimpy. The salads were something I would quickly fix for a quick dinner at home. The main dishes were good...one of us had an interesting mackerel dish; I had a pretty good halibut with a lonely clam or two included. The (decaf) coffee came out cold, and the server seemed not especially interested, although she came back later with a warmer refill.
The place was jammed after 6 PM. I am aware that this place has a good reputation. Bottom line: Food was OK to good (except maybe the cool coffee); service fair; prices (for value received): outrageous. We eat out often, in many cities. I have had meals and service on this level for 30-35% less in similar venues. And we have had much better food at these prices, again at similar venues. The initial "out by 7" demand was off-putting..but (to be fair), was not enforced.
