“Urban hip hotel with great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

Onyx is conveniently located in Downtown Boston, near the north end close to the TD Garden and not far from City Hall and the Federal Courthouse.

If you are coming from Logan Airport, you can easily get to the hotel from the Blue Line to Bowdoin Station with a short 5-minute walk. Boston's subway (the "T") is easy to navigate for newcomers and is an affordable alternative to a taxi - one-way fares were $2.50 as of this writing. A free shuttle bus gets you from Logan to the train station. (Note: the Bowdoin Station closes at 6:30 PM weekdays, so if you come in later you will have to get off at the State Stret Station a few blocks further south. Or you can transfer to the Orange Line and take it to the North Station.)

Rooms are small but comfortable. Even with a street view, things were quiet. The staff is very helpful and friendly.

In cold or rainy weather, there aren't a tremendous number choices within walking distance, but there are some. You might want to use the T or catch a cab to get to places in downtown (Boylston, Newbury, etc.). The hotel does have its own restaurant if you don't feel like venturing out.

Not a complaint, but the nightly rate is a bit on the high side, although it is in-line with other area hotels. And, of course, not as expensive as others (think Fairmont, St. Regis, etc.). I like it because it is not a large crowded hotel,

If you are a Kimpton InTouch member, you get some, like a $10 gift card to "raid the minibar". There was also a complementary small bottle of red wine and two chocolates in the room uopn check-in.

If you prefer a more European experience and want to avoid the big chains, Onyx is an excellent choice in Boston.

So we were in Boston to attend the marathon this year, and of course everyone was on edge after the bombing. We were unscathed, but it was very chaotic around the city as we walked all the way back to the hotel. For some reason, we were extremely relieved to see a nice law enforcement presence at the hotel (one of them with a large dog). And then about 30 minutes later, the hotel manager was going door-to-door checking on the guests, making sure they were all OK. This gave us some nice comfort, and we were happy we were staying at the Onyx at that time.
Aside from that, the rooms are very nice. Great beds and bathrooms. Big sink. Nice small bar in the lobby. It's a block from the TD Garden if you're going to a game or concert and is walking distance from a lot of things to see. It's on a kind of dark side street and might be hard to find, but there are other bars and restaurants on the street and the front desk was a great help, too.

As a designer I totally loved the decor! The bed was amazingly comfortable only thing I wish is if I could have taken my dachshund but I was there on business. But if I go visit for pleasure I will totally stay here and I will take her with me.

I met Rok and Aaron when I was finally able to make it to Boston at 1:30 in the morning after flights being canceled due to weather. They were great and super helpful!!! There was an issue with the computer system not being able to make the key so they were able to see what room I already had reserved and Aaron escorted me to my room and would later slide the key under my room so I could get some rest. I had to be up at 7 in the morning to go to a meeting. So that was great of him. I would recommend onyx to anyone traveling to Boston.

Oh and that bath robes are so awesome. Leopard print for the win!!!

Needed to stay in Boston for a conference. I didn't want to stay at the usual locations, so I chose this hotel. I didn't know anything about it, other than it was near the TDBank Garden. Glad I stayed. The place is modern and hip with great service. I am tough on hotels and this one met all my needs and I look forward to returning soon

Whenever I book a Kimpton hotel I don't worry about the quality of the property and I anticipate a great experience - there are varying levels of comfort but this is the first time I've been flat out disappointed. The place is run down (furniture banged up, carpets are old and filthy - both the rooms and the common areas - and it smells musty). The service, as always is very good - friendly staff, seeking to provide a good experience - but they can't make up for the fact that Kimpton management has let this one fall apart.

Room Tip: Top level rooms have less noise from street traffic.

This one hurts but your feedback is appreciated. We have plans to refresh/renovate our lobby this summer and to do our guest rooms later in the year so hopefully this will address some of your concerns.

Thanks again,

This hotel was a good base for exploring downtown Boston and near T stations if going further afield. The staff were very helpful and pleasant. The Ruby room area was pleasant for drinks but I felt rather small for the number of guests using the hotel.
Complimentary tea and coffee am was appreciated as was the complimentary wine hour each evening,
No free drinking water in room was disappointing and the small bottle provided was $4 which i felt was outrageous. When paying a good amount to stay, a free bottle of water could be included!! The last hotel we stayed in was cheaper and provided all if the same facilities including plenty of bottled water........

The Onyx is a boutique type hotel in a great location. It is right around the corner from TD Gardens and a short walk to the Quincy Market and the Freedom Trail. The staff was friendly and helpful in providing dining recommendations and directions when needed. The only down side was the room was a bit cramped, but the location and service more than made up for it. Although I wasn't traveling with a pet, this is a very pet-friendly hotel judging by the number of dogs I encountered in the lobby. They even have a bowl of water and a blackboard with their "pet guests" names on it. Overall, it was a very pleasant stay in Boston!
