“Boston's Best Bargain”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2010

I stayed at the Hotel Commonwealth because it was one of the few hotels available in Boston during my stay with a room rate near our corporate max of $250/night. (It was slightly more expensive here.) Other hotels in town were going for $350/night and up. I was wondering what I was going to give up for that $100 less. Well, let's just say that I've stayed at those more expensive hotels and the hotel here was better from start to finish.

The service from the first moment I pulled up in front of the hotel was efficient and friendly. Even better, the room was simply exquisite. Much larger than your ordinary hotel room. So large, in fact, that there was a second flat screen TV in front of the couch to go with the one in front of the bed. I was on the top (5th) floor overlooking bustling Kenmore Square but the windows are sufficiently sound-proofed that I didn't hear any sounds from the street below.

Kenmore Square and nearby Fenway Park are great areas offering a full range of dining options. Nonetheless, the hotel offers 24 hour room service. And would you believe, free Internet (albeit a little slow)?!

I come to Boston often and while this hotel isn't particularly convenient to our office in the Financial District, the T is about a 30 foot walk from the front door.

I'm trying to think of a negative for the hotel. The lobby's on the second floor, requiring you to walk up the stairs with your suitcase (or take the elevator)? If this is the worst I can say about the hotel, you get the point. Great hotel at any price. At the price I got it for relative to the competition, a huge bargain.

We recently had our wedding event at your hotel the weekend of March 11-14. We had 23 family and friends attend who all stayed at the hotel during the weekend.

The entire staff at the hotel could not have been more gracious, courteous and attentive to us all. Bridget and Haley did an excellent job throughout the planning process right through the night of our ceremony/reception on March 13. The Gallery space was perfect for our size event and the staff who worked that evening couldn’t have been more professional and attentive – including Jeni and of course Bridget! The catering from Eastern Standard was excellent and Colleen did a fabulous job on picking the wine for the evening – we could not have had a better meal and service from the restaurant staff as well.

Dan Bahr - concierge - helped many of our guests with directions and reservations as well as help Chuck and I with many needs during both of our weekend stays in February and our weekend in March – from the bell staff/doormen to the front desk to the housekeeping staff – you could not find a better group of people working at one hotel and we wanted to let everyone know how much we appreciate everything they did to make our stay and our wedding event more than we ever expected.

The room we had "Commonwealth Suite" was unbelievable - roomy, with lots of windows, nicely decorated and the living room was fabulous - the rooms here are well worth the price for a large city! Make sure you request the turndown service while you are there - they deliver water and the best chocolate dipped shortbread cookies for a nice touch!

We had a great time visiting the Hotel Commonwealth for the Kids Weekend Event! There were planned activities and treats for the kids, starting from the time we checked in and got fun filled kid backpacks. The kids loved their stuffed animals, books, slippers, flashlights, and all the other goodies they were given.
Our room was spacious, well decorated and had all the amenities we needed, such as high speed internet and multiple televisions. It also had a thick curtain that we could pull shut so that the kids could sleep on one side of the room while we read/watched TV on the other side. We enjoyed our view of Kenmore Square.
That evening, in one of the ball rooms, we went to a bedtime book reading that benefitted ReadBoston. The readers not only read books, but acted out some of the stories and sang songs with kid participation. After the event, the hot cocoa bar was a nice way to end the evening.
The next day, there was a pancake cooking session with the hotel chefs. It went really smoothly and the kids were proud that they helped make their own pancakes.
Everyone who worked at the Hotel Commonwealth was friendly and helpful- not only to us, but also to our children. We all had a great time and would go back and stay at the hotel in a heartbeat!

We traveled to Boston so that my daughter could tour and interview at Boston University. It was incredibly convenient for this purpose. The room was lovely and the staff more than helpful. Valet parking is steep, $40 per day. We checked in too late to take advantage of the wine store next door. My husband asked how much the wine in the convenience frig was - $16 for a half bottle. Once we returned to our room, the bellman came to our door with a complimentary bottle of wine with glasses. Lovely. Unfortunately, our room was on the third floor just above a night club within the same building. We had to listen to the boom, boom, boom of the base till the wee hours. I suspect we were given the wine so we would sleep through it. We didn't even the thought he beds were quite comfortable. Ask for a room on a higher floor and away from the front of the building. Otherwise, we really liked it.

Very nice hotel with friendly staff. Loved every bit of it until we came back late one night. There's a lounge with the same entrance as the hotel and suddenly the staff get very pompous and rude. It's one thing to be rude to people entering the lounge but not people who are staying at the hotel. This was a huge disappointment and they ought to do something about it. The lounge is also nothing to write home about. Overall- too pompous and full of themselves, a right shame!

Dear "leti003",

It is with sincere apology that I write this response to you. Firstly, for the treatment you recieved at the Front Entrance of our own hotel and secondly the lack of follow up by our staff. At the Hotel Commonwealth we like our guests to describe our hotel as calm and relaxing, it seems on this stay it was anything but calm and relaxing and I apologize deeply for this.

I wanted to share some good news that the Foundation Lounge is not operating any longer at Hotel Commonwealth. In all fascets of the hotel we look to make our guest's experience unique, proffesional and at all times, relaxing. While very popular, the Foundation Lounge wasn't the absolute best fit for our hotel and has since been removed.

We also have opened up a second restaurant at our location, Island Creek Oyster Bar. This restaurant is extremely unique, serves delicious seafood creations and is one of a kind. With a full raw bar and all shellfish coming directly from local fisheries in the Duxbury, MA area, this restaurant is quickly coming quite popular for shellfish in Boston.

I understand that we can't change what you experienced at our hotel on your past visit. All I can ask for is another opportunity to show you the true Hotel Commonwealth and all that we have to offer. If you ever find your travel plans taking you in the Boston area, please feel free to contact me at rburns@hotelcommonwealth.com and it would be my pleasure in assisting you with your accomodations.

Have a very nice day and we hope to see you again at Hotel Commonwealth once more!!

Warm Regards,

Ryan E. Burns

My husband and I both work in the hotel industry and travel frequently for business and leisure. We stayed at the Hotel Commonwealth on NY Eve in a jr. suite on the 4th floor. Check-in was smooth and friendly. The valet and door staff were great.
The room was phenomenal. The space was well thought out, pleasantly decorated and the bathroom was spacious with plenty of room for toiletries (the hotel provides Fresh brand amenities which are fantastic); the bed was cozy (great blanket) and the sitting area was as comfortable as one I'd have in my home.
The linens all smelled like they'd been washed in nice detergent, not the normal bleachy smell of hotel linens. The showerhead was great. We had a great night's sleep. The hallways and service staff were quiet and we did not hear any street noise at all.
Room service was very, very good and Eastern Standard restaurant was very good for breakfast the next day. There is a "T" stop right outside the entrance to the hotel so it was easy to get around the city. It was a great stay and I would recommend this hotel without hesitation.
