“One night in Boston: excellent choice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2013

I had no doubt my stay would be pleasant: good location, good reviews. What surprised me was the price: $250 on travelocity where nearby hotels asked for more than $400 per night (isn't that crazy, even for Summer time?)

The Hotel commonwealth was excellent. The accommodations were very comfortable, clean and high-end for the reasonable price. The staff was very accommodating and friendly. The location is not in the heart of Boston's tourism but the subway is located only a couple feet from the hotel and the subway system in Boston was very easy to navigate. If you aren't interested in riding the subway, the walk, is beautiful featuring some of Boston's most beautiful brownstones. We would surely stay here again.

My wife & I stayed here with our 10-month old son for 3 nights and couldn't have been happier. Of the other options to stay in Boston, this was a reasonable one that was still more than we were used to spending but found that the service we got was worth it. They delivered a crib to our room at no extra charge with a stuffed teddy bear and baby bath products included. The room itself was very clean and nice, and we had a great view of Fenway from our window. The staff all knew us after just one day, and the doormen were always quick to help with strollers and bags (cracking jokes at our son too). The Eastern Standard restaurant that's attached is very nice, and they deliver to your room (we had to wait about 30 minutes, but that's what they told us). The location is amazing too - you're literally next door to the Kenmore subway stop, and Fenway is a 5 minute walk over I-90. It's also just a 15-20 minute walk to the MFA or Copley in either direction, which was great.
When we go back to Boston we will be staying here again.

We enjoyed a perfect stay from before check in to after we checked out. The rooms were impeccably maintained, ranking among the cleanest rooms I've ever enjoyed, and the housekeeping staff kept everything stocked and refreshed nicely. The bathroom was large and had large glass shelves on which to store toiletries. The beds were comfortable with plenty of pillows.

We chose this hotel based on the Tripadvisor reviews. We were not disappointed. I have no idea why this hotel is priced so much lower than most other hotels of this caliber in Boston. We enjoyed a perfect stay from before check in to after we checked out. The Commonwealth get our vote for best in Boston!

Just completed a 5 night stay...and would return again without hesitation. Steven at the front desk was wonderful...he helped us with all sorts of things, kept us hydrated with free-flowing bottled water, and effortlessly arranged reservations for us at the immensely popular restaurants on the first floor. (Island Creek Oyster Bar=best seafood by far!) We waited in the comfort of our room, and when the table was ready, the restaurants phoned us to let us know!

We also enjoyed breakfast in our room one morning, and were surprised at the reasonably-priced offerings...most big-city hotel breakfasts are outrageous! It arrived at precisely the time requested...easy and delicious.

Everyone working at Hotel Commonwealth during our stay was lovely, friendly, completely without pretense. The rooms were impeccably maintained, ranking among the cleanest rooms I've ever enjoyed, and the housekeeping staff kept everything stocked and refreshed nicely. Oh--and no bothersome early morning knocks to see if they can get in...nice. Premium towels (Frette), sheets and toiletries...even a full-sized umbrella tucked away in the closet. Pillows were a bit mushy though...don't know if they offer firmer ones--I never asked!

We were upgraded to a suite overlooking Commonwealth Avenue, thanks to an offer right here on Trip Advisor. Soundproofing is great...no elevator noise, not a peep from neighboring rooms, and no street noise to speak of EXCEPT when there's an event at Fenway just behind the hotel...and then all bets are off. I don't know how baseball game crowds are, but there was a two-night country concert during our stay, and we could hear the post-concert obnoxiousness into the wee hours on the sidewalks below, as revelers tried to use the hotel entryway to hail cabs. So if serenity is high on your list, you might want to book your stay when Fenway's vacant!

What follows are little things that don't alter the 5-star rating we gave, but are issues that management might want to address to achieve absolute perfection...
First, related to the above-mentioned chaos surrounding Fenway events...if you have the misfortune of arriving back at the hotel just as the teeming throngs from Fenway dump out onto Commonwealth, well...good luck. It's harrowing enough trying to wedge your car into the teeny slot in front of the hotel for the valet; but late at night, the valets weren't always visible. Hopefully the hotel will consider beefing up the valet staff on those nights...we had to go hunting for a valet, with the tail end of our car jutting out precariously onto crazy Commonwealth Ave, and drunken concert-goers closing in on us like paparazzi...it wasn't pretty!

Might want to increase the hours for the concierge as well. During our visit, the concierge wasn't available much before 10am, or after 5, it seemed. So for those of us who had questions outside of those hours...we relied on hotel operators or google. Improving this area would be much appreciated.

Also...we had an AMAZING shower in our room...with great water pressure, which is REALLY hard to find in so many hotels! However...the super-bright LED light overhead is blinding! Dialing that wattage down a bit would make the experience extraordinary! I liken it to eating at a restaurant with delightful food, but uncomfortable chairs...perhaps the hotel doesn't want us to linger too long in the shower...?

Final suggestion: While the toiletries are lovely, the soap, for some, may have a more "manly" scent than some of your female guests would prefer...perhaps finding a more neutral scent, or offering an additional option would be a nice touch.

If you've read this far, I hope your ultimate take-away remains that this is probably the FIRST place we'll call next time we're in Boston. 99%=lovely experience...but since I presume management will be reading this...tweaking a few minor issues will vault this place into the stratosphere!

Dear Alc93,

We truly appreciate your review. Thank you for taking the time to mention so many aspects of your experience here. Also, thank you very much for your recommendations at the end. We will surely take all of these into consideration. I know driving up to the hotel with an event at Fenway just getting out can be a little nerve wracking. We look forward to seeing you again in the future.

We (wife, husband, and three boys--12, 10, & 5) were traveling during the early part of July and were looking for accommodations for our family of five that there were affordable, clean, and comfortable. As we were driving from New Hampshire into Boston, I saw Hotel Commonwealth on the "Hotel Tonight" app at a very good rate of $189/night. I called the hotel directly (I prefer booking directly so as to avoid any potential third party problems), spoke with Luke, and he said they could honor the rate for two connecting rooms (one king connecting to two full/queen room). So I booked!

Upon arrival, I was a bit concerned about location (across Fenway and highway). However, once in the room, we could not hear any traffic noise. Now there were no games for the next three nights, so I am not sure how busy/noisy it would be during those times, but we were quite happy with the spacious rooms. Jane called up to the room to see if we needed anything, and when I asked for a mini fridge, it was quickly sent up.

The beds were comfortable with plenty of pillows. There was a desk and chair and also a table with two chairs. The bathroom was large and had large glass shelves on which to store toiletries and such (Usually we find that even though hotel bathrooms are large, they lack storage--not in this case.). We ordered room service which was timely. Yes it included tip and fee, but the prices were not outrageous.

We had dinner and breakfast at the Eastern Standard Restaurant and enjoyed the atmosphere (nice bistro music and lively bar) and the meals (dinner portions not too big nor too small; nice variety; breakfast was quiet, food substantial). The restaurant was not overpriced, nice portions, and attentive service. It is not a typical hotel restaurant but more of a dining destination in Boston which made our meals quite enjoyable.

Subway stop is right out the door and Newberry Street is a ten minute walk. Most taxi rides were around ten dollars.

The valet (who was patient while we rearranged the rental van), bellmen, and desk attendants were all polite, friendly, and attentive. The young staff was professional, courteous, and helpful.

We enjoy traveling and even our boys appreciate a clean, well-run, friendly hotel. So I'd have to say the the Commonwealth exceeded our expectations.

Room Tip: Check Internet for prices but book directly with hotel. Service was exceptional.
