“Always a good bet.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

I've come to have a few "go to " place sin Boston, depending upon where I need to be, how I'm arriving, how long I'm staying, etc. But regardless, when the price is right, Hotel Commonwealth is the best plavce to stay. Great service, from the time you arrive, to when you leave. Two great restaurants within, centrally located, and clean, comfy rooms. You can't go wrong staying here.

What more could be asked for in a hotel sandwiched between Island Creek Oyster House and Eastern Standard? Even the Bates Motel could go unnoticed when one is sated from the abundance of oysters and tasty beverages. But the Hotel Commonwealth delivers as if you would be locked up in the hotel room all night without any other entertainment. The staff were friendly (offering complimentary hot chocolate or water at check-in). They offered an upgrade to a suite at a nominal fee but glad we didn't take since the normal king room was plenty spacious with a desk, an armchair, 2 closets, and a large wardrobe with TV. The room was very quiet (hallway noise absent). The water pressure in the shower could peel one's skin off and they offered bath products by Fresh (score!). The bed was very comfortable and such an abundance of pillows, my husband dreamed of being attacked by the abominable snowman. Overall, an excellent stay for a hotel in the city at a good value.

My wife and I took a weekend trip to Boston and we stayed at the Hotel Commonwealth mainly due to the reviews on Trip Advisor. We sure are glad we did!

We arrived Boston via a red eye flight around 10:30AM on a Saturday. We saw that the hotel was located on the subway's green line, so we decided to save a few bucks and take the subway in. Bus from the terminal to the subway (not very convenient), catch the blue line to Government Center and connect with the green line to Kenmore Square. $5 fare vs. $20 cab ride, so it was worth it, but keep in mind the green line gets very, very crowded. Luckily we had seats so we could keep our bags on our laps, but at certain times I would not want to try and take bags on this.

We got off at Kenmore, walked up to the street, and the hotel is 20 yards away. It was about 11:30AM, we thought we'd give it a shot to check in. The staff was super friendly from the bellhop staff to the front desk team. They know what it takes to make people feel welcome - sadly this is something that most hotels lack. We had no issues checking in early which of course was no surprise. We upgraded from a Kenmore to Commonwealth room which was nice for the extra space and the view. We also had booked the bed & breakfast package which included breakfast at Eastern Standard.

The bellhop took us up to our room. Everything in the hotel is so nice from the lobby to the elevators to the hallways to the rooms. The hotel obviously pays great attention to detail in decorating and maintaining the property. Our room was fantastic - lots of space, nice street view of Commonwealth Avenue, bathroom had tons of space with a separate room for the toilet. The style is very traditional, but still felt modern and fresh with Ipod docking stations and flat screen TV.

As we flew in on the red eye, we took a quick shower and this was the one minor issue I had with the hotel. The water pressure was very strong. It was nice in the beginning, but toward the end of the shower, it started to hurt my back. Perhaps a different showerhead would solve the problem.

The front desk was very helpful in providing maps and advice on how/where to go. We ended up spending most time toward the city (Freedom Trail, North End, Quincy Marketplace), so a little planning went a long way to avoid spending a lot of time going back & forth. But the hotel location is super convenient to Fenway Park, Boston U., House of Blues, so for most people coming for those specific attractions, it wouldn't be a big deal. The location was really great with many banks along the road as well as some fast food dining options (McDonalds & Qdoba).

The bed & breakfast package included $50 breakfast at Eastern Standard which is accessed through the hotel. Fantastic breakfast, it deserves its own review. Highly recommend.

We checked out on Sunday and stored our bags at the hotel to continue sightseeing before our evening flight. Came back to the hotel late afternoon and decided to take a cab to the airport as the subway was particularly busy and we didn't want the hassle. As mentioned above, cab ride to the airport was $20, so not too bad.

All in all, we loved our stay at the Hotel Commonwealth and we plan to return next year!

I was told I received a room upgrade at check-in. Not sure what they meant by that, but I definitely thought the room was very nice for the price (see photos). In November 2012 it appeared they were adding a Starbucks in the hotel building; there is also a Dunkin Donuts just outside.

We had a very nice stay at the hotel. Upon check in we were helped by a nice young man to our room. He was kind enough to offer to fill our ice bucket.
The staff was very helpful. I liked the location, very close to THE HOUSE OF BLUES.
We had everything we needed within walking distance.
It was a nice visit and I would recommend this hotel. It was very clean as well!

Checked into the hotel commonwealth on thanksgiving eve and was welcomed warmly by the front desk. The room was beautiful and clean. We spent a little time in each dining establishment and even ordered some room service from a very nice gentleman...Paul?
Overall a very pleasent experience, I will certainly return.

The Hotel Commonwealth is a gem in Kenmore Square and in greater Boston. My boyfriend and I spent a night here for a last minute trip to Boston and HC made the time spent incredibly special. From our first greeting at the front desk, to the incredibly comfortable and beautifully designed rooms, to the hit restaurants just downstairs (Eastern Standard, Island Creek & Hawthorne), we were so, so pleased with our visit. Cannot wait to recommend to all for a quick trip or a long stay in this unmatched, approachable luxury. Thank you, HC!
