I stayed at The Lenox at the start of the holiday season for 2008 and checked out on Christmas Eve to transfer to The Commonwealth Hotel, also in Boston, simply as a change of venue on an extended break. I booked through Expedia as it was a better rate than the hotel offered me directly and got a great deal. I had originally intended to stay at The Boston Harbour Hotel but when I telephoned they were a bit snotty in attitude and the price quoted went up between quote and confirmation, so I cancelled and I am pleased I did ! The Lenox is far superior in so many ways.
The Lenox is a very nice hotel in a great location, especially if you are going to Boston for the first time. It is walking distance to all the main attractions, Newbury Street, Boston Common, Beacon Hill, Trinity Church, Copley Place and very close to the T stop for the underground at Boston Public Library.
My room, a "Double Double Deluxe" was on the 7th floor, on a corner overlooking Boylston Street and Exeter Street. The room was spacious and clean, but a little dated in decor and just a little lacking in maintenance, but not in cleanliness. Don't let this description put you off staying here as it has an old hotel honesty and feel to it and super modern decor wouldn't suit this hotel.
The welcome and service from the staff was extremely good, particularly the door staff. There was complementary tea and coffee in the lobby each morning, but not in the bedroom. Breakfast was care of Dunkin Donuts accross the street as the hotel breakfast menu was overpriced, as is regularly the case. Why more hotels dont offer a simple buffet breakfast at a fair price is beyond me.
The other niggle I had was the bar in the hotel. It is totally inadequate in size to service the hotel. The thought of a quiet drink at the bar on an evening soon falls away when you can't get a seat as there are twice as many guests as there are tables and chairs. There is another bar downstairs, an Irish bar, but this suffers from the same fault. There are plenty of other bars to choose from locally so again, don't let this put you off.
I would definitely stay here again as it offers a high overall standard, great value and a great central location.
