“Dirty, creepy, overpriced”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013 via mobile

This is below my minimum and should be below IHG's as well. I am platinum in their frequent-guest program and have been for years so I have plenty of experience with Holiday Inns. This is a poorly-maintained property. The room was small, stuffy and overlooked a dreary alley with some seedy bars. I did not feel safe here. The bathroom was awful. The door didn't open or close without a struggle. Same with the closet door. The toilet seat was a thrill ride (or a safety hazard). The shower was MOLDY. The bedding smelled like dirty socks. The carpet was not clean in the room, but far worse in common areas and stairs.
But the worst part was the people. The valet parking, and there is no other choice, is slow, rude and $40 per day! When I asked the guy at the desk for a bottle of water my second night, he wanted to charge me $1.50. I reminded him I am platinum and I will review this hotel and he reluctantly offered me one for free. This hotel seems to exist solely to exploit foreign workers and rip off (mostly) foreign guests. I stay in other big cities frequently (I was in NYC before here) and do not have that impression. Skip this hotel. There are others much nicer and cleaner nearby.

We were looking for a location in Boston close to the North train station as we were going to, and coming back from, Maine. We booked this online without knowing anything about it. We were very pleasantly surprised! The room we had on our way up was quite nice-very clean and comfortable. Ours was directly across the street from TD Garden arena. It happened to be a night that the Bruins were playing an away game in Chicago, but the streets were alive with people. It was great fun to walk around that area and down to Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall. People were pleasant and not at all rowdy. The room seemed to be well sound-proofed; we didn't really notice the noise from the crowds outside. A week later when we returned we were given a larger room with a kitchen that was located at the back of the building. No view, but again, very nice, comfortable and quiet. The breakfast was good, much more of a variety than I expected. The staff was very professional and pleasant. I would certainly stay there again. We also thought that the price was reasonable considering the time of year (June) and the location.

We visited Boston (for the first time) a couple weeks ago and we did not plan ahead (first mistake). When my boyfriend and I travel usually we just go with the flow, pick a location and find hotels as we travel and normally we have great luck and we're flexible enough to have fun and make it work. Our first night in Boston was a Sunday, the week before the Bruins were in the finals. We found this hotel that day, at a price that was reasonable (under $200/night) and we were in the heart of the city. Walking distance to everything. When we arrived the required parking (if you wanted to use their parking lot), was an additional $40/day. No hotel parking. We opted to find our own which in the end was about a half of the price as it would've been through the hotel for a 3 night stay in Boston. I didn't research enough and didn't realize Boston would be like visiting NYC and parking would be that much of an issue. The first room they gave us was "odd." You walked in and there was the bedroom, one good size room with a king bed and TV. Beyond that was the "suite," and couch, kitchenette, etc. Hated that set up, it was weird to have the bedroom off the door to the suite. We looked at two other rooms, and one of them was again "odd." The only two windows were tiny and at the top of the room, even though we were on one of the above floors. It was like being in a basement with high small windows, but the room was "normal." We chose the more standard room with a view of the street and open floorplan and it was pretty nice. Not the nicest we've ever stayed in but considering it was Boston we understood that was the price for that type of stay.

I gave it 4 stars because they were very accommodating letting us choose another room and the people at the front desk were very pleasant and helpful. The valet man (young) was very nice and helped us plan where to visit for dinner and fun in the evening. The next morning they were booked and we had to find another hotel (or pay $450 for the two rooms they had left), but they were very nice about helping us find less expensive accommodations. We hadn't realized the Bruins would hike up hotel prices within a good 15 mile span of the area and I think we would've had a better time if we had planned and researched ahead. But no complaints really about this hotel, except that had they not had that standard room available that we were happy with, we wouldn't have liked the "odd" rooms we were first shown, at that $200 price especially.

Room Tip: Look or ask about the room first!

Dear Christine C,

Thank you for your recent stay with us and for being our guest. We are glad that we found a room that was up to your standards and apologize for the time it took to do so. Being in a historic building some of the room shapes might not accommodate all travels. We appreciate your patience and for rating your stay high and thank you for the nice comments regarding the staff. Please visit us on your next trip to Boston.
Warm Regards

First, the location is RIGHT in front of the Garden (Sports complex in Boston), so when there are games, be warned it will get rowdy - and we are from Philly and know what that means; Loitering, smoking, filthy language is part of the after-scene.
Second, the street itself also has more local bars and pubs, and not the neighborhood grill type... "townie bar" is the way to describe it, with a clear and obvious "bouncer" presence outside each establishment. Given that we had a 5 year old with us, it was somewhat shady in the evenings and especially so since we stayed there during one of the Stanley Cup games, even though the Bruins were away. The hotel is literally next to the sports studio they broadcast from after home games, so it is just best to keep in mind that while its location may be nice and close for games, it can get a little crazy. There is a liquor store, pubs, bars, restaurants all within walking distance. Since the town knew it would be crazy, they had a great police presence as well. (be sure to thank one of them when you walk by… they are nice folks )
Additionally, there is a Hostel on the same street, half a block down.
Hotel itself:
Elevator was horrifically slow, so you may be better taking stairs under several circumstances.
Breakfast area was VERY small and very crowded, so the first morning we basically skipped it…. we were in no mood to ask the “lone travelers” (of which there were several) to try and move from a table with 5 chairs so we could sit with our daughter.
Business and fitness center are like most Express’s… one or two treadmills and bikes. Cleanliness was average, since we found our Channel listing card to be filthy along with the remote. No dishes or silverware in the cabinets for the room we had with a sink and fridge.
Valet was great, but VERY pricey to tip and store car… there is no reasonable parking otherwise, and they have to park the car at a garage a few blocks away, so it is a challenge to “keep things in your car for later”, and they need a solid 20 minutes to get it for you.
We had a plumbing issue in our bathroom, but it was handled VERY quickly, professionally and empathetically - so the service was outstanding and the staff very nice, considerate, attentive and aware. Overall, the hotel itself is clean and relatively up-to-date, with a few minor annoyances that come with any old building, cheap machinery (yet still functional) and life itself. The location itself and the fact it was family travel prevents me from giving it any more than 3 stars. It would be 4 had I been traveling for leisure, business or for a game.

Room Tip: room 310 had a small fridge, sink, etc... and was not anywhere near the the streets, so no noise to...

Nice Hotel with great staff! Clean rooms and the standard Express breakfast. The Fitness room is pathetic but the hotel made arangements for guests to use the gym across the street at a very low cost which was great!
Hotel is on the old town Trolley route (hop on hop off) so if you are a tourist - great venue!

Dear NielWorldTravel,

We appreciate and value your feedback, thank you. We were glad to hear that you enjoyed the hotel and the great staff, but we apologize that the fitness center was not up to your standards. With free weights, 2 treadmills, one recumbent bike and an elliptical machine our fitness room usually fills the needs of most guests. But that is why we have the arrangement with the gym outside of our front door for other guests looking for more. We are glad that you were able to use the facilities.
We hope to see you again when your travels bring you to Boston.
Thank you

Wonderful, clean hotel centrally located to most Boston attractions. King suite accommodated our young family of 5. Free breakfast was wonderful each morning. Hotel was virtually soundproof. Right across the street from TD Garden (we took the train from Portland and walked with luggage). Walking distance to Aquarium, Faneuil Hall & Quincy Market, Commons & Public Gardens, Museum of Science. Hotel was clean, staff were wonderful, the concierge remembered us each morning and asked about our activities from the previous day. Will definitely stay again!!

You'll have to excuse the noise from the street below, loud, pounding music from a white Lexus, garbage truck pick-up at 2 am, you are staying in downtown Boston after all. You are within walking distance to Little Italy, the financial/government district, famous historical sites, the Charles River wharf, Boston Commons, Feneuil Hall, shopping and the ``T`` (North Station transit stop nearly at your door) will take you everywhere.
The staff are terrific, especially at the front desk.
The daily self-serve breakfast gave you a great start for the day.
Overall, a good experience.
