Wanted to have a quick overnight stay with my wife. Living in the Charlotte area, we have heard lots of great things about the resort.
Let me start out with the good.
The main lobby is fantastic, it is extremely impressive and the two huge fireplaces are something to see. It is amazing how large the stone is that is used to build the fireplaces. Secondly, the spa is equally spectacular. My wife and I both had Massages(She loved hers, mine was okay) but the facilities are a spectacular. The multiple pools in the cave like setting is really amazing.
When I initially went to their site I booked a King sized bed with a breakfast for $229 and the Massages were $139. So I knew it is not a cheap place. When we arrived(1:30) we went to our room and it was not a King sized bed. So we went down to the front desk and they said they would get us a King room, but it would not be ready for a while. We checked our luggage and headed to the spa. This is where were were informed that an automatic gratuity of 20% would be added, 15% goes to masseuse and 5% goes to the rest of the staff, I am okay with that, but I would have love to have known this before, but I was okay with this.
We then went to our room and I was okay. While we were in the "Old" part of the hotel, the room was pretty nice. I thought they did a good job of keeping the old feel, however the bathroom had a drop ceiling like you see in a school.(Very historic). Later on when we went to bed, we noticed that our room must have been across the hall from the laundry room. We heard bangs and mechanical noises until about 11:30pm and they cranked back up around 7:00 am. We could hear the spin cycle on the wash constantly and the service people outside our door working all morning. So much for a relaxing morning to sleep in.
I looked at the bill and was surprised to see a $25 resort fee and a $22 Valet fee. Adding a few drinks to the bill(No Food), State, County taxes, it quickly added up to $750 for one night, two massages and an extremely noisy room.
I am sure that some people will be impressed with the history of the room and the grandness of the lobby and view, but for $750 I would think I would at least not have the opportunity to sleep in past 7am if I wanted.
Don't stay in the "Classic" hotel. They will make you pay more for the other wings...
