“Historic Property is a must do”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

So behind in my reviews, but I will start with my trip in October to the Grove Park Inn. If you have lived in the south for any amount of time, there is a good chance you have heard of, or have been to the Grove Park Inn.

This was my first time and I was fortunate enough to stay there for a business conference (ie - the company picked up the tab.) I was able to go in Mid October when fall was hitting its stride and the leaves and weather was just magical.

I arrived at the main inn around 4pm and was taken away to the awe inspiring beauty of this stone building constructed in 1913. I received immediate attention upon exiting my car and was shown to the registration desk.

You walk right inside to the great hall where 10 foot wide fireplaces roar in this enormous room. Fit with rocking chairs, lounge tables and a magnificent view, I knew this place was special.

I stayed in this historic inn which was the original part of the hotel. The property is huge with newer facilities connected.

Room was very average to say the least. It was spacious and comfortable but nothing to write home about. Elevator to get upstairs was manned by a bellhop. Very Cramped, old but historic.

Terrace restaurant was beautiful but we did not eat there. Did grab dinner Friday night at Blue Ridge dining room which had what I would consider a very above average seafood buffet. Everyyhing you could possibly want was there. Great salads, desserts, breads. Views were unreal from the restaurant.

Spent our nights in the great room sipping on cocktails sitting next to the enormous fire. This was the best part of the day.

Everyone hears about the spa and while I had great intentions to at least enjoy it for the day $90 a person to walk through the door (without services) is absurd to me.

Golf course was beautiful, but pricey.
Overall, this is a must do in my opinion. Had a I paid for this stay I would not be as happy with everything, but it would be something I would at least do once in my lifetime.

“Worth every penny!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

Amazing views of the mountains. Best spa experience ever. Food is awesome. We reserved two rooms for Thanksgiving and even though it was incredibly busy, the staff made sure we felt special. You will never regret staying here. Truly a special place! Highly recommend! Be prepared......meals are very pricey but the food is fabulous!

Room Tip: If you plan to use the spa a lot, try to get a room on the 4th floor. Makes going to/from the spa...

“Christmas Vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

We stayed at the Grove Park Inn for Christmas last year, and are returning again this year for Christmas. Everything about our stay last year, was such a treat. It really made the holidays special for our family.

Upon arriving at the resort, the valet in red jackets and black top hats greeted us. When we entered the lobby, there was a lot of activity with live music, a roaring fireplace, and gorgeous Christmas decorations. The mountain views were breathtaking and there was so much to see throughout the property, including several theme decorated Christmas trees and hundreds of gingerbread houses. Literally, a feast for your eyes!

We stayed in the Vanderbuilt Wing, in a room very close to the parking garage. This was very convenient for coming & going from the hotel. We felt the daily parking fee was completely worth it. No, I don't like to pay to park - - but I don't know of any nice resorts these days, where the parking is free. Our room was spacious, and allowed plenty of room for our dog's crate. There was a very nice, wide open, grassy area for walking our dog and the hotel even provided waste bags! Every day, they sent a new dog toy to our room. There were so many nice, small gestures that made our stay special. The "memorable gift" (as part of our Christmas package), was a $75 hand crafted crystal ornament, a mini replica of the original part of the hotel. The decorative table top Christmas tree (also part of our package) was a gorgeous pre-lit artificial tree decorated with gingerbread people. The quality of amenities was appreciated.

During our stay we enjoyed the spa, again - yes it was expensive, but we were happy to pay for the services and quality of our experience. The spa is one of the nicest I've ever visited. My family also enjoyed the on-site sports complex (at no additional charge) - with ping pong, raquetball, swimming pool and fitness center.

The quality of the food & drinks was outstanding. Best Bloody Mary ever - is in the Sunset Terrace/Lobby Bar. Great coffee drinks there too. The selections on the breakfast buffet (Blue Ridge Dining Room) were both creative and delicious. Our Christmas dinner buffet was a real treat too! Unlike many many other properties - this hotel is not skimping on quality of ingredients and it shows. I hope that doesn't change. It makes a real difference. The only negative thing we experienced with the Blue Ridge Dining Room, was the wait times. As part of our holiday package, daily breakfast was included. We were not told reservations were needed for this. And, on day 2 of our stay, we had to wait almost 2 hours for a table. The reason for this, was all the local Asheville residents booked reservations for breakfast. So even though I was in line before they arrived at the hotel - these folks were quickly seated before me. This, I thought, was very unfair. Had we been advised to make a reservation, we would have done that. From what I understand, this year, they are not allowing any reservations to be booked for breakfast. We'll see how that goes. My feeling is, if you are staying at the property, you should have priority seating.

The staff and management at the hotel were wonderful. It is because of the quality of service and ammenities - we are excited about returning again this year!

“Great Place to Hang Out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

Just a great place to stay and experience. Views are wonderful and facilities are top notch. Employees do everything to make your stay memorable. Lobby has wonderful large open fire place for just relaxing and looking into the fire.

Room Tip: Ask for higher level Mountain view room for better views.

“beautiful property, great staff, horrible management”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

My parents had been to Grove Park four times before our trip with them for Thanksgiving. I was very disappointed after hearing their tales of it and our visit. The dining room was poorly managed with long lines even for people with reservations even though there were tons of tables. However, they were understaffed for even those tables! Parking was a disaster areaand the ten dollar fee PER NIGHT to selfpark was ridiculous. If you're visiting Asheville, stay somewhere else, eat somewhere else, and just come for a spa day.

Room Tip: If I were to stay again, I would try the more modern rooms in the wings instead of staying in the hi...
