Drove from Fancy Gap, VA to Asheville, NC today! The Blue Ridge Mountains should not be missed. We were told by other travellers to go as far as Asheville because the views are spectacular.... we were not disappointed! Once we arrived in Asheville it was time to rest. Travelled down the main drag staying onTunnel rd. Places were booked near the entrance to BR Parkway so we just followed Tunnel Road. This brought us into an area with all sorts of businesses. There was a Mall with all the typical anchor stores, restaurants, motels and hotels. After looking around a bit, we decided to stay in a retro style motel. The Mountaineer ( sign reads " with a touch of modern") was not the most expensive place nor was it dirt cheap! For 2 people with 2 beds non smoking we paid a total of 65.34 tx included. It seems like this was the average cost of the local motels. The gentleman who met us at the front desk was very friendly and made good conversation. The room was adequite. Shower was great , room was comfortable and AC was very cool. Colors and furniture were certainly retro! Overall the place was clean and comforatble. Breakfast consisted of bagels, toast, apples, bananas, tea, coffee, hot chocolate and orange juice. In conversation that morning, I learned that this was a family owned motel. Desk clerk was quite the talker and made us feel welcome. Nice area to visit, wished we could have stayed longer to explore.
