My boyfriend and I were looking for a very welcoming and relaxing place to stay as a celebration on college graduation and farewell to North Carolina before we moved away. Cumberland Falls exceeded my expectation and provided the perfect getaway.
The hospitality and true devotion to the guests was evident before we even arrived, as Gary called us to make sure we were ok as a huge storm had just come through the area. He then very warmly greeted us once we got there, and gave us a brief tour of the absolutely gorgeous and charming house. Throughout our stay it was very obvious that Gary really enjoyed running the bed and breakfast and meeting all of his guests. The attention to detail was amazing, with things like robes in the bathrooms, personal reading lights, candy set out all over the house, many many guides and brochures to restaurants and attractions in your bedroom, cable TV, wireless internet...I could go on and on! And of course one of the most important signs of a well-run inn, everything was extremely clean.
We stayed in the Lion's Den, and it was definitely my favorite room in the house (I peaked at the other rooms before other guests arrived). All of the rooms were beautiful, but the Lion's Den has its own appeal with gorgeous bay windows that look out on enormous trees, a very cozy and relaxing feel, high quality bed linens, and the fun of counting the lions in the room. For anyone hesitating to stay in this room because it doesn't have the whirlpool tub, just forget about that and book this room! I still enjoyed a relaxing bath in the deep antique tub, probably more so than a modern whirlpool tub because of the unique atmosphere created by keeping the original tub.
The rest of the house is extremely charming and well-kept. Gary and Patti have done an excellent job in keeping the decor and furniture up-to-date and in great shape but very complementary to the old age and feel of the original architecture. The garden was very peaceful and lovely, and I had a lot of fun watching the koi in the ponds out back. There is one enormous koi that seemed especially eager to greet you (and beg for food of course!).
And of course I have to mention the food! The breakfast was DELICIOUS! It consisted of a fresh out of the oven bread item, followed by a scrumptious baked fruit, and ended with the main dish. We had spinach frittatas and potato wedges one morning, and pancakes with strawberries and sweet and spicy bacon the other. I was so sad I couldn't stay longer and try even more dishes. We also grabbed more than our fair share of cookies and cupcakes that were set out in the lobby. I wish I could get recipes for those ginger cookies!
All in all, we had an absolutely wonderful time. It was the perfect place to stay while visiting Asheville, and I really felt pampered afterwards. Gary made sure our depature was just as smooth as our arrival, and sent us off with a picture of us by the waterfall and a homemade sour cream cake. Yum! Thanks again Gary and Patti for making our vacation absolutely perfect!
