My husband and I stayed at the Applewood for a relaxing weekend in December, and we loved it. Nancy and Larry were wonderful hosts; we felt completely at home and loved visiting with them (and their two very sweet dogs!). Nancy went above and beyond to accommodate my restrictive gluten-free diet and is an excellent cook. The inn was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. We will most certainly return to the Applewood anytime we visit Asheville, and we would highly recommend it to anyone.

We decided to go to Asheville for a long weekend to celebrate my husband's birthday. It was one of the best weekend getaways we've had and Larry and Nancy had a lot to do with it.

From the moment we arrived, we felt as if we were staying at a friend's house and not an inn. The inn is comfortable, not fussy. You are encouraged to curl up on the sofa to read your book or put your feet up on the coffee table while you watch TV. The fireplace in just about every room takes the chill off the cool evenings. And personal touches abound, from the birthday bread for my husband to the lemonade for the expectant mom also staying at the inn, nothing goes unnoticed.

After Nancy settled us into our room (the Winesapp-- it was perfect!), she set out the nightly wine and cheese spread and joined us on a side porch to walk us through Asheville on her "home-made" map. It turned out to be the one thing we took with us everywhere we went.

Each morning, breakfast was a feast - 3 courses and you will eat every last morsel because it's all sooo good!. Don't expect to be hungry for lunch. But do take Larry and Nancy's recommendations for restaurants. We did and were not disappointed.

Larry and Nancy make every effort to ensure your stay in Asheville is everything you want it to be. Not because it's their job as innkeepers, but because it's just their nature and they truly want you to enjoy their city as much as they do. Whether you decide to spend a lot of time at the inn or just a little, you'll love every moment there.

We highly recommend the Applewood Manor Inn, you won't be disappointed.

For three nights, and three mornings, our accomodations were the way we wish we could have all the time, all in a delightfully homey, antique-decorated setting. Between Nancy and Larry, we could ask questions about the area and the house and get great information. The adorable dogs, Mr Monty and Miss Maggie helped ease my cat 'withdrawal,' and the porches offered a hidden, quiet place for us to sip wine and relax. Healthy, delicious, HUGE, multi-course breakfasts, and wine and cheese for cocktails each evening gave an opportunity to visit with the other guests. We never could have dreamed up such a pleasant place! A stone's throw from Biltmore (which was our destination) we ended up with more appreciation of this lovely B&B than Biltmore. No kidding. Biltmore was interesting, but the Applewood has personalized charm and warmth. We were totally relaxed and excently cared for in this very pretty, historical structure!

Some friends booked a stay at Applewood Manor for us on a recent trip from California to the south. We stayed in a number of places including Savannah, Charleston, Santa Fe and Asheville. Our stay here was the best of all. Great location, fair prices, wonderful breakfasts and great company made this a real highlight fo us!

Nancy and Larry Merrill are fantastic hosts who will do everything possible to make your stay enjoyable. Nancy's breakfasts are huge and delicious; we couldn't possibly eat lunch before 3 PM! The main area of the house is always open to the guests, with multiple indoor lounging areas as well as comfortable porches on two sides and a gazebo in back.
Our only problem was that the toilet in our spacious and otherwise comfortable cottage was not enclosed. There was no privacy, except a narrow half-wall. Even after 40 years of marriage, my wife and I don't want to share ALL of our bodily functions! We took turns using the bathroom in the main house and managed OK, but it was somewhat inconvenient.
We still would encourage people to stay at the Applewood Manor; just pick a different room if the open toilet area is of concern.

  • Liked — The innkeepers, the breakfasts, the main house and common areas
  • Disliked — Open area for toilet in our cottage
