“Ahhh, Applewood!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2011

My husband and I frequent bed and breakfast inns. We are often treated well and appreciate the quaintness of each home. Applewood Manor Inn in Asheville, however, must move to the top of our list for beauty, comfort, hospitality, and consideration. The innkeepers are warm and welcoming, the house is lovely, the social hour provides time to mingle with other guests, and Nancy and Larry make every effort to see that their guests are their first priority. Even sweet Maggie, the terrier, adds to the pleasant experience of spending time in this historic home. I could go on and on about the delicious breakfasts, location, porches, gardens, but I can't adequately describe what Applewood has to offer. You must experience this inn to appreciate perfection, rest, relaxation, and that "Ahhh" you have been looking for.

An excellent large old house within walking distance from downtown Asheville. Rooms are wonderfully apportioned and owners are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful when it comes to questions about things to do and places to go in the Asheville area. Many of the rooms have private decks. Big bountiful breakfasts are served every morning. Wine and cheese every evening at 5:00. Highly recommended.

I had excellent care at Applewood Manor. The attention to detail and desire to please the customer was unsurpassed. Nancy's great cooking made breakfast a delight.

Nancy and Larry provide a welcoming place to stay. Breakfast was great, with three courses. Nancy provided helpful recommendations for dinner. The location is convenient, just a short walk from downtown Asheville.

I stayed at the Applewood Manor Inn for a week recently. It was perfection. Beautifully appointed home in a nice location. Large bedrooms. Every detail attended to by friendly, gracious owners,Larry and Nancy. Breakfasts were delicious. Different hot dish every day as well as fresh fruit and home baked bread, homemade granola and yogurt- a morning feast. Especially enjoyed the afternoon wine and cheese social hour. Larry and Nancy were very helpful with my travel plans around Asheville. Homemade Lavender spray in your room as well as ice and crystal glasses for water and plush towels. If you are looking for a memorable stay in a B&B, this is it.

For almost 3 decades, when given a chance, we stay in B'n'B's. By now the total must be gettin' up to at least 50, if not 75. Applewood is easily in the top 10% (if not 1%) for our tastes. The hosts are as friendly as can be, without being in your face. They have just about everything you'll need for a comfy week-long stay (too bad we had only two nights). Indeed, comfy is the keyword. It's a B'n'B but you don't get the suffocating twee-ness of certain high end places. Nancy and Larry also know everything you need to know to have a good time in Asheville. Nancy can fill you in on Biltmore lore not available on the tour; Larry not only knows directions everywhere (including to Altanta airport, 4 hours away!) has an amazing ability to memorize everyone's name when he introduces y'all during the most memorable three-course breakfast you'll wish you could pack up and take home with you. I don't understand why it's not #1 on TripAdvisor.

This trip was our 3rd trip to Applewood. As in our past experiences, we found the hosts (Larry and Nancy Merrill) to be most accepting and providers of a great welcoming and homey place to stay! If you want to just relax, sit by the fire and read or meet new people. We plan to continue this trip each year! The Asheville, NC area provides diverse activities with great food and anything and everything to keep you from getting bored. Try it, it's a great place and Nancy's breakfasts are AWESOME! (No need for lunch, you will still be full from breakfast.)
