Nancy and Larry Merrill are fantastic hosts who will do everything possible to make your stay enjoyable. Nancy's breakfasts are huge and delicious; we couldn't possibly eat lunch before 3 PM! The main area of the house is always open to the guests, with multiple indoor lounging areas as well as comfortable porches on two sides and a gazebo in back.
Our only problem was that the toilet in our spacious and otherwise comfortable cottage was not enclosed. There was no privacy, except a narrow half-wall. Even after 40 years of marriage, my wife and I don't want to share ALL of our bodily functions! We took turns using the bathroom in the main house and managed OK, but it was somewhat inconvenient.
We still would encourage people to stay at the Applewood Manor; just pick a different room if the open toilet area is of concern.

Nancy and Larry are the absolute most charming hosts ever. Nancy's reputation among local innkeepers is well-respected and she is known to make her breakfast meals "from scratch!" We skipped lunch everyday after her three-course breakfast served by her very humorous husband, Larry! The Inn is welcoming, and beautifully decored. My husband and I had special requests that were accommodated on both our visits and we look forward to returning to our "home-away-from-home," Applewood Manor Inn Bed and Breakfast. “Perfect!”

Applewood Manor Inn Bed & Breakfast

We had a wonderful stay in the Winesapp Suite. Nancy and Larry did everything to accommodate our stay. It was my husband's birthday and the whole trip was a surprise for him. Nancy made it SO special by coordinating a surprise bottle of champagne, chocolate covered raspberries and balloons on our last night of our stay. It was heavenly. The house was immaculately clean. It smelled like lemon and lavender when we first walked in, with a hint of something cooking in the kitchen. Catherine did a great job of spiffing up our room each day. Breakfast was awesome both mornings! The first morning was the fruit, yogurt and home-made granola followed by the cornbeef hash. The second morning had the same first courses but with a quiche as the main entree for breakfast. It was SO good.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience and we couldn't have asked for a better place to stay! The neighborhood was beautiful, the house was cozy, and we would recommend the AppleWood Manor to anyone.
Thanks!

We stayed in the Winesapp suite- very nice, spacious, comfortable. We enjoyed the large bathtub and having control of our air conditioning.

The rest of the house has a lot of character, too, but felt a little bit grandmother-ish. It was all very well-kept and clean.

The owners of Applewood Manor were very hospitable and helpful in any way possible. We loved the city of Asheville. It has a lot of character and a welcoming atmosphere.

Breakfast was good but NOT amazing. Food is one of the most important parts of a bed-and-breakfast, so I was dissapointed. Fruit and granola was delicious, as was the lemon pound cake(very fresh tasting). However, our main course of corned beef hash seems more like a diner-type of breakfast than what you should get when you are being pampered at a bed-and-breakfast. The guests were raving about the breakfast from the day before, so I guess I was there on the wrong day!

Management Response
Nancy Merrill, owner/innkeeper
(Management representative)

In response:

•When a reservation is made at the last minute with guests planning a late arrival on that same day and for a single night only; they miss the social hour and a lot of the full experience of Asheville and the charm of our Inn.
•Concerning breakfast, corned beef hash is a family recipe made from scratch, lemon bread (not lemon cake) and all breads served are also from scratch as is our granola. All meals served are carefully thought out healthy breakfasts respecting different allergy problems as well as special diets of guests. Since most guests stay for a longer period than one night, we generally ask the guests at breakfast if the menu planned for the next morning is okay by all. The homemade corned beef hash is served as a side with scrambled eggs and more fresh fruit after the first two courses (fresh fruit with granola and yogurt, and then the bread course).
• We have WiFi-Internet access throughout the Inn, a computer in the pantry that guests can utilize to check their email, plane flights, etc., a copy machine, printer, and fax. A desk or table with chairs is provided in each bed room/suite for lap top or other use. The common telephone is also located in the pantry off the formal dining room. All rooms are equipped with ipod compatible clock radios. Evening turn-down service is provided with a chocolate left on each pillow.
•We give a personal business card to each guest with the Applewood’s telephone number and our cell phone numbers; to make sure guests are able to reach us at any time, day or night, whether we are downstairs in our living quarters or out on errands.
•Our mission at Applewood is to have our guests feel comfortable, relaxed yet in a setting of elegance.
•Recipes are shared with guests and we truly try to make everything with tender loving care and serve breakfast in an appealing manner. Tables are set with antique china, sterling silver flatware, linens, crystal and candle light. Breakfast is served to each guest, no buffet.
•Lastly, if Applewood can be recommend to friends then that is the best compliment of all and much appreciated.

My husband and I were looking for the perfect place to celebrate our first anniversary in Asheville, and the Applewood Manor Inn more than exceeded our expectations! It was absolutely the BEST place that we could have spent this special time. The B&B itself is beautiful, and the Winesapp Suite was awesome! We were pleasantly surprised with the size of the room and the tasteful decoration. The room has a sitting area with a leather couch and two arm chairs, a king size bed, a table with chairs, a huge T.V. with DVD, and a very large bathroom with a two person tub, shower and two sinks (very important!). It was large enough for us to feel like we had our own little private oasis but cozy at the same time! The B&B sits on over an acre of beautiful land with a two-person hammock, a tree swing and bird bath. There are also two porches for use of all the guests, one of which has rocking chairs and a porch swing (adorable!!).

While the B&B alone is amazing, the owners, Nancy and Larry, make it an exceptional place to stay. They are incredibly kind and thoughtful and went out of their way to make us feel like family. The first night that we arrived (a bit later than we had anticipated), Nancy left a sweet note and a snack of brownies and cognac for us on our bed. In the morning, we had to get up early to go whitewater rafting, and Nancy offered to get up at 5:30 and make us breakfast! When we didn't accept the offer and just asked for some fruit, she gave us delicious bread, granola, yogurt AND fruit to take with us! That night, the power went out in the neighborhood for a short while, and they both sat on the porch and chatted with us and the other guests for some time. We were having such a good time that we were actually disappointed when the power came back on! They even donated a bottle of our champagne to our celebration, and we shared a toast and some of our wedding cake with them on our anniversary. In addition to all this special treatment, Nancy and Larry put out a snack of wine and cheese daily around 4 p.m. and turn down the beds every night, leaving a piece of chocolate. Oh, and how could I forget the breakfasts! Fantastic, three-course meals!! My husband LOVES to eat, and he was not disappointed! Nancy even gave him extra servings - he was a happy boy!

If you're going to Asheville, the Applewood Manor Inn B&B is THE place to stay!
