“Treat Yourself”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2011

The Folk Art Center is a wonderful combination of demonstrations by skilled craftsmen (in wood turning, glass blowing, etc), museum quality displays and beautiful hand made products for sale. Even, if you aren't normally an enthusiast of folk art you will likely enjoy this stop.

We bring all our visitors here to look at the small museum and the shop that has all the fantastic handicrafts from this area. Everyone likes it.

Wonderful handmade items made locally. A great place to find unusual, one of a kind gifts or something special for yourself.

Incredible quilts on display. Thought there would be more rustic handiwork.

“Neat Art / Pricey Gifts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2011

The upstairs to the Folk Art Center is devoted to exhibits featuring some artists from Asheville and others from the Appalachia. There was an interesting quilt exhibit about the art of quilting, different types, etc...I thought it was interesting.

There was also a little section devoted to the Blue Ridge Parkway and how it came about, and that was both educational and interesting. Being from an area near the Blue Ridge Parkway it was neat to see how it came to be and how it is maintained today.

There was one more section just devoted to different folk art and although some of the pieces were creepy (fence with heads carved into the top of the posts) most of it was pretty cool.

Downstairs was the craft center where handmade folk art and gifts are sold. It is an extensive collection but mostly out of my price range. Then again, it is handmade and art is always more than what I think it should be. Needless to say, there's a lot of cool things to browse over even if you aren't buying.

Altogether, it's a good place to spend an hour (probably couldn't spend more than that without being pretty bored) if you have one to spare. We didn't pay admission so it was just a nice quiet start to our day in Asheville.
