Asheville has many very good places to eat, but somebody has to be the best and Sunny Point Cafe gets our vote. My son, who lives in Asheville, introduced us to this gem a few years ago. We have eaten breakfast, lunch and dinner there and I grade these meals as excellent, excellent and extraordinary, in that order.
Last night's dinner was outrageously good. My wife and I split fried avocado tacos appetizer. Fried avocados? I know, sounds weird doesn't it? There were two tacos with sliced fried avocado, feta cheese, a little kale, black beans and smaller white beans. It was one of the best dishes I have ever had. No wait, that might have been my entree, duck enchiladas with copious veggies, sweet chipotle sauce and melted cheese. Wow! There is a genius in the kitchen connecting flavors so well that it create memorable dishes.
My wife had lobster mac and cheese which she says she can't wait to go back and order it again. Large chunks of lobster over pasta and a cheese sauce that was almost an alfredo. If that wasn't enough, the dish included some thick cut bacon. Again, the mixing of seemingly unrelated tastes and textures into a magnificent dish.
There have been some previous negative comments about service. Ours could not have been better. Friendly and relaxed would be a good way to describe it. Four adults and my adorable 14 month old granddaughter ate exceptional food, four glasses of wine and a beer and the bill before tip was $113. No kidding.
Don't go to Sunny Point for atmosphere. It really does feel like a diner. Go there for the food. It just doesn't get any better than this.
