“The Blackbird of Paradise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013 via mobile

If you want good food simply but wonderfully prepared in a casual upscale atmosphere, you found the place!! Chef Bobby is well-credentialed and innovative. The portions are huge but the prices not so much. Right on Adheville's main drag!!

We've eaten here several times over the last few months and every meal, from the wine to the appetizer to the entree to the dessert has been spot on! High quality food prepared well in a vibrant dining room with attentive waitstaff, a sure bet every time.

“Fabulous oyster appetizers ...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

Our meal tonight at Blackbird got off to a wonderful start with the fried oyster appetizer ($8). The oysters were plump and juicy, the breading was light, and they were perfectly fried. It's not easy to find good fried oysters, but these were some of the best I've had.

The rest of the meal was slightly downhill from there, but still enjoyable. My New York Strip ($25) was just an Ingles quality steak, but the Zinfandel wine sauce and buttermilk mashed potatoes with crispy fried onion rings and sauteed vegetables made the dish. As her entree, my wife had appetizer portions of seared scallops ($8) and shrimp and grits ($7) -- the scallops were tasty but the shrimp and grits were just mediocre with no special flavors or style. Definitely not one of the best versions in Asheville, my spouse said, and she has probably tried nearly all of them.

I was a little put off that my Jack Daniels and water was $10, the same as most of the specialty cocktails on the menu. What's with charging ten bucks for shot of Jack? My wife's Manhattan was only $7.

We topped off the meal with a huge portion of Blackbird's coconut custard cake ($8), most of which we took home. It was cold and a little dry. The drip coffee ($1.75), though, was dark and rich.

Blackbird has done a great job with the design of the restaurant, with its glass front on Biltmore Avenue, high ceilings flying blackbird accents all around and the imaginatively named "Crowbar" in the center. If full (it wasn't tonight) I imagine it would be quite noisy.

Service was very good, and with three appetizers, one entree, four cocktails, one glass of wine, one dessert and one coffee, the meal came to $108 with tax but before my usual generous tip. That's a little more than I expected but still a reasonable price for a pleasant evening.

I'd go back, but I wouldn't put the Blackbird in the top 10 of Asheville restaurants, despite its popularity since opening late last fall. Just wish the entire meal had been as good as those amazing oysters!

We paid $7 (so-called special event fee, something at the Orange Peel) for parking at the Aloft public garage. It usually would be just $1.50 or so.
