“Need a reservation and come early to park”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

The admiral was amazing!!! Everyone suggested it and they were right. My fillet was cooked perfectly AND was served quickly. They have these "small" portions which is the perfect serving for me. (4oz of meat) I didn't feel the need to overeat or "waste" any. Since we were on vacation and didn't have an option to take home. The atmosphere is perfect. Great wine selection and house drinks. The restroom was a little small since it's only one stall, but overall love this place. It was to cold the night we went, but I'd love to have been able to sit on the front porch and enjoy the fire pit.

“Delightful surprise. Great Value.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

We went due to the high ratings per tripadvisor ratings and it was well worth it! We left a message for reservations and received a call back a couple hours later (reservations are a must at this popular restaurant). The only spot they had open was 5:00pm so we nabbed it (please read my other Asheville restaurant review, we were in town for the Biltmore).

Parking's a pain. You need to park a block and a half away on the same side as The Admiral in a lumber yard parking lot.

As we had a late lunch, we ordered a bunch of appetizers, only to order an entree to go to eat as a late night snack.
1. The Mussels: cooked perfectly in a tomato based sauce with smoked bacon. The quantity was impressive, a great value and almost a meal in itself. I thought the bacon was slightly overwhelming but it wouldn't prevent me from ordering it again.
2. Pork belly: Pork belly has been around for a while, it's been big in NY for a bit but only now starting to gain traction elsewhere. This dish was also good but not the best that I've had. It was fork tender but was missing that highly seasoned crispy crust that I think it needs. The pickled fennel complemented the dish perfectly with it's sweetness and acidity.
3. Steak tartare with 68 degree egg: The size and quantity of this dish was also impressive. It arrives on a large wooden slab with cornichons, slices of cheese, and grilled baguette slices. In case you don't know how to eat this, you spread some of everything onto a slice of bread. Don't forget to pour the quail's egg on the beef. The beef also had some capers mixed in, what a great complement!
4. Lastly, we took the Ribeye home. Asked for it rare, and it was cooked as requested. Very good with nice seasoning. The beans it came with weren't to my liking, perhaps I haven't eaten enough southern style beans?

Sadly, we were running late with our dinner and weren't offered a desert list and in our panic to get out of there, we didn't ask to see one to take something home.

If you're in town, stop by, it may be the best meal you'll have in Asheville!

“OMG...wow...so good”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

...those are the words we found ourselves saying, throughout our meal! The atmosphere is friendly, intimate and cozy, but lively. It pulls-in a very diverse crowd in terms of age and styles, but all with at least one thing in common...the love of good food. The short ribs appetizer is a definite MUST! It is perfectly seasoned, flavorful and moist-tender. We also enjoyed their pork chops with apple cider greens, and the mahi with lemon rissoto. They offer a great selection of cocktails and beverages, including homemade ginger ale, and a tasty prosecco pomegranite spritzer. For dessert, the chocolate cake with mouse is a hit...and their cheesecake with pistachio is a very unique and tasty treat. Nothing on the menu is what I would consider "typical"...they add something different to each menu item that makes it a one-of-a-kind culinary experience. So, go...and enjoy!

“GO! NOW!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 24, 2012

This place was difficult to reservations to and I can see why! They were nice enough to squeeze us in- which put them high on my list to begin with. THis place looks like a dive from the outside and is really laid back with retro-chic decor. The service is good but not quick- which fits perfectly. The staff is nice and knowledgable. We had the BBQ Quail as an app- wonderful! I had the Halibut as an Entree- easily one of the top 5 meals. My husband had the Ribeye and enojoyed it. We both would return and have already encouraged others to go when in Asheville. Make reservations well before you go (if you can) we started trying on Tuesday and ate on Saturday.

“Great food experience in a funky dive bar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012

You drive by The Admiral and you go "What - that place!" Looks like an old building from the 40s with funky diamonds painted on the outside and then you go inside and you say "What?" cause you feel like you stepped back into 50s or the 60s. But then you look at the menu and you realize that you are absolutely in the right place! Cold water oysters, beef short ribs to die for, humbolt fog blue cheese on a bed or arugula. Then you look at the entrees and you see all this locally sourced food and fish from the NC coast and you can't wait to order. And, oh yes, a great wine list and fun cocktails. And, it is right around the corner from my house! Yea!
