“Peaceful mountain retreat near Asheville”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

We recently enjoyed our first visit to the Sourwood Inn and can't wait to go back. The Innkeepers couldn't be more warm, friendly and eager to share their love of the mountains with the guests. They are lifelong residents of Asheville and a great resource for any thing you want to do in the area. The wildflowers were in full bloom on the property and Susan sent us to some other nearby hikes even more abundant in wildflowers. You can curl up with a book in front of a fire or relax on the porch in a rocking chair, never leaving the Inn, or you can use the Inn as a base to explore Asheville and the beautiful NC mountains! A delicious hearty breakfast will prepare you for the day and you will sleep soundly after a gourmet dinner in the dining room. Rooms are large with very comfortable beds and large bathrooms equipped with plush towels, a large soaking tub and lovely mountain view.

We recently spent 3 wonderful days at the Sourwood. We went there on the recommendation of friends, and have recommended the Sourwood to several of our friends since we've returned. We echo the responses of other TA advisors about the many attributes of the Sourwood. We stayed on the 2nd floor in room 6 and recommend that floor for the best views of the mountains. The bed was very comfortable and the fireplace much-appreciated. The bathroom is luxurious. The combination of the deep tub, the bubble bath, the heated towel rack and the waterfall spigot were much appreciated. I was forced to abandon my shower one morning in search of my camera to photograph the red-header woodpecker that appeared on a tree outside of our bathroom window. While we were there in early April, the weather for all but one day of our stay was much more like winter than spring with frozen precipitation and temperatures hovering around freezing. The weather did not spoil our trip, however, as we amused ourselves reading, enjoying time spent in front of the many fireplaces throughout the Inn and talking with the staff members. The owners and all their staff members were some of the friendliest and most helpful people that I have encountered. Our stay included a Thursday evening so we made reservations to eat at the Inn and were not disappointed. The food and service were excellent. I highly recommend that you take the owners suggestions to heart regarding arriving during the daylight for your first visit as well as bringing your own food and beverages for your first night's stay. The innkeepers are happy to keep any items requiring refrigeration cold for you as the rooms do not have refrigerators. They have recently installed energy-efficient individual room air conditioners which will provide relief from the summer heat on the rare occasions that the temperatures rise enough to warrant it. While this was our first visit to the Sourwood, we hope to return as soon as possible. Thanks to Susan, her parents and the staff for making us feel so welcome!

Room Tip: The inn is shaped like a boomerang with all of the bedrooms on the outer edge which hugs the side of...

Our favorite place to stay in Asheville! It is the best of both worlds.. close to the eclectic city but in a beautiful mountain setting with views and an ever changing nature trail! Susan the inn keeper is so warm and makes everyone just feel good to be around her! The food is great and LOVE the cookies in the afternoon! The bath is wonderful .. makes you think you are in your own private spa! Wood burning fireplace in your room completes the romantic setting!
Bring your own bottle and celebrate life!

We stayed at the Sourwood Inn on a recent chilly March weekend and had a terrific time. The Inn is tastefully decorated in an Arts & Craft style with great fireplaces, local art, and nice architectural details. There were sweet and savory snacks in the lobby when we arrived, which we sampled with the wine we had brought with us. We ate dinner at the Inn that night, which was fabulous. They have their own chef and served us in the main dining room overlooking the woods below. Our room was on the 2nd floor with a great view of the mtns and the valley below. We enjoyed our own fire after dinner (it was already set up with paper, wood and kindling ready for a match). The waterfall tub in the bath is not to be missed. The staff was friendly and helpful. What a special, special place to enjoy the NC mountains. We live in Asheville and enjoy trying out local hotels on special occasions. This one is tops!

Room Tip: Second floor rooms have terrific views of the mountain sunset and the valley below

I have stayed many times at the Sourwood Inn, and it a very special place. For a wonderful get-away for romance, rest, or simply a great place to explore Asheville, this is the place. The rooms are wonderful--spacious, plenty of antiques and character but with a clean touch, and a gorgeous bath that makes you feel beautiful. The staff is most warm-hearted and kind. The breakfasts are yummy and makes me (a non-morning person) want to get out of bed. The location is a short drive to downtown Asheville, but the location is off the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Inn has a fun walking trail as well. The staff is so welcoming and will help you with your stay. This a super find!

Room Tip: Book early for October. The leaves are amazing!

The drive in is definitely not for the faint-hearted...or large SUVs! It's one lane in and out and whew...terrible steep down one side with no guardrail. Not a good idea to arrive in the dark, that's for sure! But if you are looking for peace & tranquility a bit off the beaten path, you have found it. Less than 15 rooms total, it's a idyllic escape from the big city noise and crowds. The house is large and charming with innkeepers and staff who truly cater to your every need. It is BYOB, so if you want wine with dinner, bring your own and they will happily chill it for you. The meals are outstanding, though you do need to make reservations for dinner (and it is a separate charge). Our room was large with a separate sitting room & fireplace and a wonderfully huge bathroom with a large soaking tub with massive windows that opened to a perfect view of the mountains! The food was outstanding, even the late afternoon snack of freshly baked cookies and flavored tea was a nice surprise. Bring your walking/hiking shoes and there is a nice path that's a good little walk around the property with a couple of switchbacks but easy to find your way. In the finished basement, there is also tons of books as well as a ping-pong table and a pool table to pass the time. Not sure how my husband found this little gem but it holds great memories and I am looking forward to going back.

Room Tip: There's is no AC and though it is normally pretty cool in the mountains, we had the one really h...

Could not have asked for a better weekend getaway. Comfortable, clean, warm, inviting. Felt at home right away. This is not just because of the facilities - the folks who run it make it so much more special. Just the right amount of privacy. The views from the room - and bathroom - are amazing. Lots of stuff to do right on the grounds or within minutes from the Inn. Great food. Coffee hot and fresh first thing in the morning. Wood burning fireplace set up and ready for a one-match fire that burns crisp and hot through the night. For those who love fly fishing, it's a good home base... Could go on and on. Don't hesitate - just book and go. You won't regret it!

Room Tip: The planning that went into this place means all rooms have incredible views.
