My wife and I have stayed there twice for a week during the past five years, and I've stayed there by myself on occasion overnight. Considering that it's right off the interstate and surrounded (on the Tunnel Road side) by various businesses, it's really very peaceful, quiet, and almost secluded. By all means, stay on the back side facing the Swannanoa River and, yes, the train tracks across the river. There's a small park-like area on the riverbank. The trains run at night, but I like trains so I don't have a problem with this. It's sporadic and only lasts a few minutes. As for the rooms: they're not the newest and some aspects are a little worn by age and normal use. Nonetheless, they're clean and comfortable. The price is definitely right. The staff is very friendly and down-to-earth. The laundry room is bare-bones but adequate. The down side: the breakfast has to be eaten in the dining area (I suppose they have to do this to discourage people taking more than their share), and there is no microwave, none that I saw anyway. We like to heat our own food (we're vegetarians) and eat healthfully. You could always buy a cheap microwave and bring it with you (management might have a problem with this if they knew, so don't mention it and be kind of discreet), if you have dietary needs and travel on a budget. There's a charcoal grill pit if you want to use it, as well as opportunity to fish (supposed to buy a license). Also, the pool was not ready for Memorial Day weekend, so I brought swimtrunks for nothing. The Zaxby's adjacent to the motel is superb (as wings, fries and salads go). This is our mountain "home away from home" and we plan to return again, this time with our son who will be born in March 2007. Oh, by the way, the place is definitely kid- and pet-friendly. All in all, we are very positive about this place. Very enjoyable stays!
