I finally found edible Mexican food in Florida! For $11.11, including tax and tip, I enjoyed Mole Poblano, real tortillas, passable salsa and chips and a passable Horchata. The salsa had a kick but was too watery, but at least they got the chips right.
The place: La Quebradita Taquería 702 N Krome Ave, Homestead; 305-245-4586. Open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Sunday 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Food cooked by Mexicans for Mexicans, with the occasional Gringo obviously in town because of a NASCAR race or they ventured off the Turnpike on the way to and from the Keys.
Grade: B+
Added bonus: Mexico Market, located at 407 Park Place, is in what most Gringos and any less adventurous person would consider the most unsafe and quite dangerous part of Homestead - the area west of downtown. There is a strip of stores including an ice cream vendor from Michoacán and Mexican music vendors. It is straight out of a Mexican border town and 100 percent of the people there are either from Mexico or from Nicaragua. But please venture to Mexico Market and pick up some fresh handmade tortillas to go. They are $1.25 a pound, and I picked up a half-pound just to have (9 tortillas) at a cost of 65 cents. They are authentic, and the Mexican men on line at the register were purchasing these tortillas by the truckload. The rest of the market is your typical Mexican market - a smaller version of Vallarta Supermarkets back in L.A. They also sell churros at 75 cents a pop, but I can't vouch for the sanitary conditions of the ones on display. They tasted pretty good, but I hear bacon-wrapped hot dogs from Tijuana street vendors do as well.
