“Incredible”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2013

The parking is within a few hundred yards of the river. The walk into the canyon is fairly easy, although you will need to walk up stairs and ramps and back down to get into the canyon. Once there, the views are incredible. We had the place to ourselves. Lifetime memories for sure.

“Best Hike”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

Do not miss the Santa Elena canyon hike. There are some steps and those with vertigo may be a bit put off but suck it up and enjoy this great area of the park. Go early to get a parking place. The river is very low now due to drought so river rafting is not possible. Hike the canyon for best views and experience. It is like a smaller version of the grand canyon that you can do easily in a couple of hours.

“Santa Elena Canyon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2013

The Santa Elena Canyon Trail starts from Santa Elena Canyon Overlook, and is about 2 miles roundtrip. After passing Terlingua Creek, the trail ascends through a staircase to a viewpoint, then again descends back to the edge of the water. It further continues until the towering 1500 ft canyon walls meet the riverbed. The formation of these gigantic limestone cliffs took about 60 million years. A number of shell fossils embedded in the large boulders provides a glimpse of those formative years.

“Santa Elena Canyon, BBNP”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

We've hiked this canyon in Big Bend twice now, and it seems more beautiful the second time around. It's an easy hike, which adds to the enjoyment. You can do the entire hike in about an hour; be certain to take your camera.

“Tranquillity”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2013

I hiked this trail early in the morning and I had the canyon to myself for about 2 hours. It was so peaceful and beautiful. I'd like to say it was a real privilege to be able to enjoy it alone but that makes me feel a bit selfish. there is a bit of up and down to get into the canyon but even just walking across to the river gives some great views. Where the trail starts is a good spot for a picnic.
